The City University of New York Athletic Conference annually recognizes its best and brightest student-athletes, who not only excel in athletics, but succeed in the classroom as well. Over the next few weeks, CUNYAC will recognize those who truly embody what it means to be a student-athlete. The award is presented by Hospital for Special Surgery, the official hospital of the CUNY Athletic Conference.
Kayla Smith, a member of the Bronx Community College women's basketball team, majors in Liberal Arts. Smith has been an active member on campus, serving as a leader of the BCC Dance Club. She is also a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society of two-year college students showing academic excellence, service and leadership.
In addition, Smith serves as an on-campus tour guide for CUNY Explorers, an initiative with the goal to ensure that every middle school student receive the opportunity to visit a college campus to promote high school, college and life success.
On the court, Smith grabbed a career-best eight rebounds against nationally-ranked Nassau CC, matching the total twice more during the year.
"My life's purpose is to empower with faith, guide with integrity, and renew others with indiscriminate love," said Smith.
Smith will be attending Hunter College in the Fall, where she plans to study Dance Education and Psychology.
