The City University of New York Athletic Conference annually recognizes its best and brightest student-athletes, who not only excel in athletics, but succeed in the classroom as well. Over the next few weeks, CUNYAC will recognize those who truly embody what it means to be a student-athlete. The award is presented by Hospital for Special Surgery, the official hospital of the CUNY Athletic Conference.
Stephen Peters, a member of the CCNY baseball team, sports a 3.48 grade-point average, majoring in Economics with a minor in Anthropology. A CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll member, Peters participated in the NCAA Career in Sports Forum last summer, serving as a member of the Division III Next Steps program. The program was created to build a pipeline of talented ethnic minority candidates, with an interest in Division III coaching and/or administration, in an effort to ultimately diversify the division.
On the field, Peters was a four-year starter for the Beavers. A team captain, the center fielder was a career .388 hitter, amassing 135 hits, 55 RBI, 57 stolen bases and 100 runs scored. A two-time CUNYAC All-Star, two-time ABCA All-Region and D3Baseball.com All-Region performer, Peters has a career .468 on-base percentage and .540 slugging percentage.
"Stephen Peters is an excellent representative of The City College of New York and the baseball program," Head Coach Steve Macias said. "Stephen was a four-year starter who worked hard both on and off the field. Stephen earned the respect of all of his teammates, coaches, and the staff of the athletic department. Stephen is a class act and I consider myself lucky to have coached him."
Peters was off to a strong start to the 2020 campaign before play stoppage due to COVID-19, batting .355 with 11 hits and a perfect 3-for-3 in stolen base attempts.
"It's an honor to be nominated as a CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete," Peters said. "I always made sure to dedicate and commit to excellence on the field and in the classroom. Thank you to CCNY and my coaches for supporting me and allowing me to achieve excellence in the classroom and continue to play the sport I love."
