The City University of New York Athletic Conference annually recognizes its best and brightest student-athletes, who not only excel in athletics, but succeed in the classroom as well. Over the next few weeks, CUNYAC will recognize those who truly embody what it means to be a student-athlete. The award is presented by Hospital for Special Surgery, the official hospital of the CUNY Athletic Conference.
Mohamed Sayibou, a member of the Bronx Community College men's soccer team, sports a 3.65 grade-point average while majoring in Exercise Science and Kinesiology.
A CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll member, Sayibou is very involved, holding a fellowship position in the CUNY Research Scholars Program. A native of Lome, Toga, Africa, his project focuses on Geographical Survey and Analysis of Subsurface, working with Dr. Sheldon Skaggs from the Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Sciences Department.
In addition, Sayibou was part of BCC's Inter Organizational Council (I.O.C), which provides representation and advocacy for all student clubs and college-wide organizations. He was the I.O.C representative of BCC's Muslim Student Association Club in the Fall. Last Spring, the sophomore attended the 24th Annual John A. Gibbs Conference on environmental issues at Medgar Evers College, and also attended the BEYA (Black Engineer of the Year Award) STEM Global Competitiveness Conference in Washington, D.C.
Off campus, Sayibou is a member of the Zongo-Togo/USA Association in the Bronx, an organization with the goal of helping families either financially or with food provisions.
On the pitch, Sayibou played along the back line for the Broncos, appearing in 14 games with seven starts.
"Mohamed Sayibou is a true example of a hard-working student-athlete on and off the field with the same drive and dedication in both," Broncos Head Coach Mohand Amokrane said.
