CUNYAC/HSS Scholar-Athlete of the Year Honorable Mention: Ryan Layman, Staten Island

The City University of New York Athletic Conference annually recognizes its best and brightest student-athletes, who not only excel in athletics, but succeed in the classroom as well. Over the next few weeks, CUNYAC will recognize those who truly embody what it means to be a student-athlete. The award is presented by Hospital for Special Surgery, the official hospital of the CUNY Athletic Conference.

Ryan Layman, a member of the College of Staten Island men's soccer team, sports a 3.57 grade-point average with a major in Psychology.

A team captain, Layman recently completed an outstanding four-year career with the Dolphins. The Staten Island native played in 71 games, the most among all active players on the 2019 roster, lending most of his time on the defensive line and in the defensive midfield. In addition to his defensive prowess, he tallied three career goals and four career assists on just 13 shot attempts, as CSI went 25-5-2 against CUNYAC opposition over that time.

This year, Layman earned First Team CUNYAC All-Star laurels for a second straight season. He played in 15 games against NCAA DII and DIII competition, as CSI went 10-5-1 overall and won its final four contests, capped off by a win over DII Felician.
