FLUSHING, N.Y. (Feb. 15, 2024) – On the eve of the 2024 CUNYAC Community College Women’s Basketball Championship, the conference is excited to announce its end-of-year awards for the 2023-24 season, as voted upon by the league’s head coaches.
Kingsborough claimed two of the three major awards, as Tionna Davis was voted Player of the Year and teammate
Jayden Vega was selected as CUNYAC Rookie of the Year. In addition, Hostos head coach
Dwight Shaw was named Coach of the Year.
Player of the Year: Tionna Davis, Kingsborough
Davis led the conference in scoring this season at 20.6 points per contest, which ranks No. 11 nationally in NJCAA Division III. She produced nine games of 20 or more points, including a pair of 30-point performances. Davis also led her team in steals (62) and assists (63).
Rookie of the Year: Jayden Vega, Kingsborough
Vega was solid in her first season with the Wave, averaging 17.4 points per game on 52-percent shooting and 40-percent shooting from behind the arc, which ranks sixth nationally in NJCAA Division III. Vega has eight games with 20 or more points.
Coach of the Year: Dwight Shaw, Hostos
Shaw earns CUNYAC Coach of the Year honors for a third straight season. He led the Caimans to a 19-4 record in the regular season, securing the top seed in the conference championship.
