The City University of New York Athletic Conference annually recognizes its best and brightest student-athletes, who not only excel in athletics, but succeed in the classroom as well. Over the next few weeks, CUNYAC will recognize those who truly embody what it means to be a student-athlete. The award is presented by Hospital for Special Surgery, the official hospital of the CUNY Athletic Conference.
Franchesca Acevedo, a member of the Lehman College women's volleyball team, holds a 3.49 grade-point average, majoring in Marketing while minoring in Health Science and Spanish.
"I am very honored and thankful to even be nominated for this and it is a great way to end my last semester," Acevedo said. "Playing volleyball for all four years of college has helped me stay focused and complete my goals. All four years have been nothing but fun and I don't think I would have been able to get through them without volleyball. I am very grateful and thankful."
On the court, Acevedo is a four-year letter winner, appearing in 100 matches in a Lightning uniform. Over her four seasons, the outside hitter has amassed 346 kills, 175 digs, 83 service aces and 68 blocks.
Acevedo saved her best for last in her senior campaign, posting career-highs in points (205.5), kills (151) and services aces (37), all team-highs.
"We couldn't be prouder to hear that Franchesca would be named a CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete," Lightning Head Coach Jessica Fider said. "She is strong and fierce on the court and in the classroom, embodying what we would like to see all of our students strive for here at Lehman. There will be big shoes to fill as she graduates next month, but we are happy that she set the bar for those athletes following in her footsteps. Congratulations to her!"
