BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Feb. 16, 2024) – The Hostos Community College Caimans defeated the Kingsborough Community College Wave, 80-56, to win the 2024 CUNYAC Community College Women’s Basketball Championship.
The No. 14 nationally-ranked Caimans successfully defended their conference title for a seventh consecutive season to claim their league-leading 11th championship in program history.
Jae’oni Davis was one of four Caimans to score in double-figures, producing 14 points, four rebounds and five steals. For her performance, she was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.
Arianna Wilder, Demaris Andrews and Ifeoma Ezike each scored 14 points apiece in the victory.
Hostos led 25-18 after one quarter of play, shooting 10-15 from the field. The Caimans were led by six points from Ezike and five points apiece from Wilder and Davis.
Kingsborough chipped away at the deficit in the second quarter, cutting the margin to one possession (31-30) with 3:39 remaining in the half. The Caimans finished the frame with nine unanswered points, including the last five from Wilder, to take a 40-30 lead into intermission.
Hostos rode the second quarter momentum into the second half, scoring the first 11 points of the period, capped off by a three-pointer from Andrews. The Caimans led by as much as 20 in the quarter to maintain a double-digit advantage entering the final quarter en route to securing the win and conference bragging rights.
The Caimans shot 51-percent from the field for the game and 54-percent from behind the arc.
Kingsborough was led by Tionna Davis, the 2024 CUNYAC Player of the Year, as she scored a game-high 18 points in the loss. Taima Flores added 12 points and four rebounds, while Jayden Vega added nine points and seven rebounds.
