CUNYAC/HSS Scholar-Athlete of the Year Honorable Mention: Danny Wynne, John Jay

The City University of New York Athletic Conference annually recognizes its best and brightest student-athletes, who not only excel in athletics, but succeed in the classroom as well. Over the next few weeks, CUNYAC will recognize those who truly embody what it means to be a student-athlete. The award is presented by Hospital for Special Surgery, the official hospital of the CUNY Athletic Conference.

Danny Wynne, a member of the John Jay College baseball team, boasts an exceptional 3.84 grade-point average, majoring in Police Studies. In addition to being a student-athlete, Danny has spent the last two years as a NYPD Cadet. Wynne volunteers and represents the 121st Precinct in several charitable events, including the Tunnel to Towers Run, Toys for Tots and Alzheimers Walk in Riverside Park.

On the field, Wynne was a two-year captain for the Bloodhounds and a two-way player, seeing time on the mound and at first base. Wynne appeared in 84 games, earning eight victories on the rubber, striking out 49 batters. In 2018, Wynne went 5-2 with a 3.64 ERA, helping John Jay reach the CUNYAC Championship series for the first time since 2008.

At the plate, Wynne was a career .243-hitter, collecting 43 hits and 26 RBIs. The Staten Island native was strong defensively at first base, yielding nine errors in 328 chances. Wynne was off to a strong start in 2020 before game stoppage, hitting .325 with four doubles, seven RBIs and a team-best 11 runs scored. He was voted Team MVP for his efforts.

"Over the last four years, Danny has been the epitome of a student-athlete," Bloodhounds Head Coach Joe Mandile said. "He has done an expectational job on the field as a team captain and two-way player while managing his time as a student and NYPD Cadet."
