The City University of New York Athletic Conference annually recognizes its best and brightest student-athletes, who not only excel in athletics, but succeed in the classroom as well. Over the next few weeks, CUNYAC will recognize those who truly embody what it means to be a student-athlete. The award is presented by Hospital for Special Surgery, the official hospital of the CUNY Athletic Conference.
Ashley Alcantara, a member of the York College softball team, holds a 3.103 grade-point average, majoring in Movement Science. Alcantara transferred to York after studying at fellow CUNY institutions Hostos Community College and Lehman College.
"This is such a great honor for Ashley to be recognized for her academic accolades," said Cardinals Head Coach Tracey Marshall. "Her drive and dedication in the classroom are the same on the field. Ashley's leadership qualities make for a positive role model as she pushes hard for success and for those around her to be their best. She is the perfect example of what we wish for in a student-athlete."
On the field, Alcantara started 22 games for the Cardinals, playing both at first base and behind the plate. In 2019, she led the team in fielding percentage (.929) and put outs (90), while ranking fifth in the CUNYAC in double plays (5).
"I am honored and thankful for being recognized as a CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Honorable Mention selection," Alcantara said. "Being a student-athlete requires hard work, sacrifice, dedication and respect. Playing softball is everything to me and has helped me develop as a leader and to strive for greatness both on and off the field. My student-athlete experience at York College has helped pave the way for a future in Physical Education and I am proud to be a Cardinal!"
