CUNYAC Scholar Athlete of the Year: Sophia Wheelan, John Jay

The City University of New York Athletic Conference annually recognizes its best and brightest student-athletes, who not only excel in athletics, but succeed in the classroom as well. Over the next few weeks, CUNYAC will recognize those who truly embody what it means to be a student-athlete.
 
Sophia Wheelan, a member of the John Jay College women’s volleyball team, owns an almost perfect cumulative grade-point average of 3.937. Wheelan is a Fraud Examination and Financial Forensics major with a minor in Mathematics and Cybercrime.
 
A two-year member of the Bloodhounds, the middle blocker/middle hitter appeared in 39 matches, tallying 174 points, 148 kills, 41 digs, 26 total blocks, and 11 service aces. In 2018, Wheelan helped John Jay reach the CUNYAC Women’s Volleyball Championship match, along with an appearance at the ECAC Division III Championship.
 
Off the court, the Hanover, NH native is a world traveler and has visited over 60 countries and six continents.
