JAMAICA, NY --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College Director of Athletics
Carl Christian announced Monday the appointment of
Hillel Perper to serve as the Cardinals' head men's and women's swimming coach ahead of the 2021-22 season.
"This is a great opportunity for me to instill an unmatched work ethic and desire to learn into our student-athletes. I believe that Athletics is so much more than physical fitness, and that the skills and friendships formed on a team can last a lifetime. My mantra is one percent better everyday and I expect nothing less from my student-athletes . I cannot wait to start working and helping our team be as competitive as possible." - Head men's & women's swimming coach Hillel Perper
Perper joins York after serving as assistant swimming & diving coach at Brooklyn College since 2019-20. While on staff at Brooklyn, Perper helped guide the men's program to a second-place finish at the 2020 CUNYAC Championships, Brooklyn's best finish in program history.
"We look forward to supporting our new head coach, Hillel Perper, as he transitions from an assistant role and moves between CUNYAC campuses. As a young up-and-coming coach, he will look to build upon the experience gained as assistant at Brooklyn College, to lead our men's & women's swimming programs forward and build upon the work of former head coach, Samantha Oyola. Coach Perper is eager to take the next step in his coaching career and his energy, commitment and knowledge of CUNYAC will allow him to adapt quickly to his new home here at York." - Director of athletics Carl Christian
Since 2014, Perper has fueled his passion for fitness as a strength and conditioning coach. He currently works at Imagine Swimming as a swimming instructor, while also developing HP Fitness, a company he founded in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Perper was a member of both the swimming and track & field teams at Queensborough Community College. As a member of the Tigers, Perper was recognized as an Academic All-Region XV selection and was recognized as a member of the CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll. After earning his associate's degree, Perper transferred to SUNYAlbany, where he achieved bachelor's degrees in both business and criminal justice in 2019.
As a native of Flushing, Queens, Perper graduated from Benjamin N. Cardozo High School. Perper's passion for teaching swimming began at the age of 16, when he became a swim instructor and lifeguard at Rockaway Beach.
"We thank former head coach, Samantha Oyola, for all of the support that she has provided in overseeing the swim program in recent years and wish her well in her new Aquatics Director position." - Director of athletics Carl Christian
