Brooklyn's Orkis and Baruch's Jackson-Hing Start Strong

Yuliya Orkis has been named the CUNYAC/Hospital for Special Surgery Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for the week of 9/2 - 9/8. The two-time CUNYAC Player of the year continued her dominant play from last season by seizing a victory in #1 Singles in the season opener against Kean University. The Brooklyn Captain controlled the tempo of the match, winning 6-1, 6-0. She teamed up with Suraya Maenhout for an 8-2 victory at #1 doubles as the Bulldogs went on to win 9-0.

Allie Jackson-Hing has been named the CUNYAC/Hospital for Special Surgery Women’s Rookie of the Week for the week of 9/2 – 9/8. The #1 Singles and Doubles player for Baruch started her intercollegiate career with victories in both matches against SUNY Purchase. Winning doubles 6-1, 7-5 and singles 7-6, (7-5), 1-0 (retired), the freshman standout is regarded as one of the top talents on the Bearcats’ roster.

The Bearcats ended a five-match losing streak to Purchase with a 7-2 victory. The Bearcats are a young team and they defeated a good opponent. In light of it being the first match, and the coaches wanting the athletes to play as much tennis as possible on a beautiful day, the two teams agreed to play two sets in doubles.

The Brooklyn College Women's Tennis team began the season with an impressive road, non-conference, victory over Kean University on Saturdayafternoon by a score of 9-0. For the Bulldogs, this was their first win over the Cougars since the 2008 season, when Brooklyn edged out Kean, 5-4. BC showed off its deep lineup, utilizing eight players, led by two-time CUNYAC Player of the Year, junior Yuliya Orkis, who won her #1 singles and #1 doubles match, along with partner sophomore Suraya Maenhout.

CSI beat William Paterson for the first time in five years, 5-4. The match marked the return of Sophia Variano who missed all of last season due to injury. CSI fell behind 2-1 after doubles but took fur of 6 singles flights to win.
