CUNYAC Men's Outdoor Track & Field Presented by the Army ROTC
The 2017 CUNYAC/Army ROTC Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships took place on Sunday, May 14th at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island. The CCNY Beavers won the championship with a 225 point effort. They edged out Lehman College, who finished in second with 121 points. Medgar Evers came in third place with 84 points. Hunter scored 84 points and York rounded out the field with 23 points.
“It feels great honestly. I wanted to come out and deliver for this team,” said CCNY’s Jeckesan Mejia. “It’s all about hard work and discipline.”
In the first men’s event of the day, the 4x100m relay, the team of CCNY finished in first, arriving in 43.15 seconds. The group got to the finish line in just 1.05 seconds before Lehman College (44.20), barely edging them out in a close finish. Arriving in third was Medgar Evers, clocking in at 45.88 seconds
In the men’s 3000 meter steeplechase, Stephen O’Shea from Hunter completed the run in 10:52.60. His time was a little bit more than 10 seconds ahead of CCNY’s Albert Leonardo, who finished in second place with a time of 11:02.22. Hunter’s William Esposito rounded out the top three by finishing in 11:10.06.
The men’s high jump was a very close competition. Medgar Evers’ Johan Jimenez jumped 1.90 meters to take first place in the event. CCNY’s Takhyung Seon would finish second with a jump of 1.85 meters.
The hammer throw is where CCNY showed it’s muscle. A pair of teammates won first and third place with strong throws. Jeckesan Mejia earned the gold medal by throwing the hammer 37.37 meters while Lehman’s James Oliver got silver as he threw it 36.46 meters. Harrison Foley took third with a throw of 29.35 meters.
CCNY would win the long jump as Stephen Ojo took home the top medal. Ojo’s jump of 6.08 meters was closely followed by the second place finisher, Lloyd Richards of Lehman, who had a jump of 6.01 meters.Third place went to Medgar Evers’ Jamal Chance, who finished with a jump of 5.89 meters.
In the 1500 meter run, CCNY’s Benjamin Freeman arrived in first place with a time of 4:17.16. Trailing him was CSI’s Luke Jackson, who came in at 4:19.87. The third finisher was his teammate Liam McMunn, with a time of 4:20.13. The second place points, however, went to CCNY’s Adler Mendoza. His teammate Merlin Padilla Jr. took the third place points with a time of 4:24.74.
Hunter placed first in the 110 meter hurdles. Jonathan Lehn got through the hurdles in 16.90 seconds to leave with the gold medal. Medgar Evers’ Johan Jimenez finished second at a time of 17.43. CCNY’s Jecksan Mejia took home the third place medal with a time of 17.90.
The 100 meter dash ended with CCNY placing both first and second. Jashane Morrison finished in 10.99 seconds, besting his teammate Timothy Lin to earn the gold medal. Lin won the silver medal, and arrived in 11.51 seconds. Third place went to Stefone Cobb from Lehman who finished in 11.81 seconds.
In the 400 meter dash, Lehman finished in first while CCNY took second and Hunter took third. Darian Livingston crossed the finish line in 49.94 seconds to claim the gold medal. Solomon Buter finished close behind in 50.59 seconds. Atta Boateng took the bronze medal with a time of 51.24 seconds.
Hunter’s Jonathan Lehn took first place in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.91 seconds. Medgar Evers’ Johan Jimenez arrived in second place after clocking in at 1:02.99 seconds. Third place went to Hunter’s O’Shea with a time of 1:03.11 seconds.
CCNY’s teammates of Baker and Mejia took home first and second place in the javelin throw, respectively. Baker finished with a 46.03 meter throw while Mejia threw it 43.81 meters. York’s Santamaria was a close third as he threw it a distance of 43.63 meters. CCNY’s Mejia continued his impressive outing, earning gold in the discuss throw with a distance of 39.51 meters. His teammate Harrison Foley came in second with a throw of 37.46 meters. James Oliver of Lehman came in a close second, with a distance of 37.42
CCNY found themselves back on top when the shot put was completed. Jecksan Mejia threw for 13.91 meters to earn the gold medal. His teammate Harrison Foley, had a throw distance of 13.31 to capture second place. In third place, Medgar Evers’ Christopher Pinto had a throw of 12.47 meters.
Livingston from Lehman proved his speed once again in the 200 meter dash. He clocked in at 22.04 seconds to earn the gold in a photo finish. This was a reverse of last year’s 200 meter final, as Livingston came in second to a photo finish. Morrison of CCNY was just .04 seconds behind Livingston, settling for second place with a 22.08 second time. Third place went to Hunter’s Boateng, who finished with a time of 22.65 seconds.
Medgar Evers’ Johan Jimenez showed how far he can jump in the triple jump. He earned first place with a 12.64 meter jump. Second place was CCNY’s Eli Joseph, who landed a distance of 12.55 meters. In third place was Lehman’s Lloyd Richards, as he recorded a 12.39 meter distance.
CCNY once again took home a gold medal. This time, it was Joseph Espinoza who did the job, running a 2:03.22 in the 800 meter meter run. Staten Island finished second, with Liam McMunn running a 2:03.36 in a close race. York’s Ajani Kerr finished in second place with a 2:04.95 finish while Medgar Evers’ Kishon Boston arrived in 2:06.22 to take third place.
The last field event of the day was the Javelin Throw, with Jecksan Mejia of CCNY taking the gold with a throw of 44.62 meters. Kuron Williams of Lehman finished in second, with a throw of 39.05 meters. In third place, CCNY’s Harrison Foley finished with a throw of 37.49 meters.
In the 5000 meter run, Lehman’s Joshua Roman earned the gold medal after completing the event in 17:04.15. CCNY’s Benjamin Freeman narrowly arrived in second place, finishing with a time of 17:05.39. Jeffry Guerrero of Hunter picked up third place by crossing the finish line in 17:12.29.
CCNY capped off the day with a victory in the 4x400 meter relay. They ran a time of 3:27.64, while Lehman finished second with a time of 3:31.28. In third place, Medgar Evers College crossed the finish line with a time of 3:34.13.”
Jecksan Mejia was named Most Valuable Performer for the Championship. His individual accolades included four gold medals, one silver medal, and one bronze medal..
With this win, CCNY takes home their seventh championship in a row. It was also their seventh overall championship in school history.
