CSI’s Aziz Mugren Earns Table Tennis Intramural Title for Second Straight Year

The fourth annual CUNYAC/MCU Intramurals Championship Series continued with table tennis at Queensborough Community College. The double elimination tournament featured 16 competitors. The participants spanned across six CUNY institutions with the Kingsborough having the most participants at four.

At the culmination, Aziz Mugren from CSI took the title over SinFong Chiu in the final round. “This was a great competition with a lot of good players,” said Mugren. “In the end though, we all came out with a new set of friends which was the best part.”

The double-elimination tournament began with six players sent into the loser’s bracket in round one. The second set of games saw winner’s bracket round one complete with another four players being sent to the loser’s bracket while elimination round one had the tournament’s first two eliminations. Elimination round two would be next and eliminate another four opponents to bring the field to just eight.

The first round winners included SinFong Chiu, Richmond Yabeh, Arsany Attia, and Aziz Mugren. Chiu would be the first winner in round two by defeating Yabeh. Aziz Mugren then defeated Arsany Attia to advance to the third round against Chiu. Mugren prevailed in the hard fought battle over Chiu.

In the loser’s bracket, Arsany Attia and Richmond Yabeh advanced to the next, where Richmond Yabeh would win and eliminate Attia from the tournament. SinFong Chiu and Richmond Yabeh would then face off in the final round of the loser’s bracket. Chiu defeated Yabeh after a very tough battle that saw Chiu pull off consecutive points to win it. Yabeh would leave the tournament with the bronze medal.

The final round was set, and it was a rematch of 2015’s contest. SinFong Chiu and Aziz Mugren were set to do battle with Chiu advancing from the loser’s bracket, and Mugren entering undefeated.

Chiu would take the first game, thus creating a winner take all scenario. Mugren and Chiu would have some amazing shots including one by Mugren that would sail ten feet in the air and land on the other side of the table for a point. In this second game, each player went back and forth with volley after volley. The score would be 18-14 in favor of Mugren late in the match. For the final point, Chiu would have a returning error giving Mugren his second straight table tennis intramural championship.
