In the CUNYAC/US Army Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship, five teams competed for the top spot in the conference at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island. CCNY would take home a fourth straight crown. Next would be York, followed by Hunter, Lehman, and Medgar Evers rounding out the field.
At the community college level, Queensborough took home the trophy with 332 points followed by Kingsborough at 126 points.
“It means a lot to us to have success in the outdoor season,” said CCNY Head Coach Hugh Reid. “There are a lot more events and our student-athletes have the opportunity to specialize in things.”
For his outstanding individual performance, Jeckesan Mejia was named the Meet MVP.
“It means everything,” said Mejia. “The whole season. Everything we have done as a team. The championship for us and my MVP really helped validate the work.”
On the track, 10,000 Meter Run was won by Richard Barbecho with a time of 37:08.78. Over a minute behind him was Williams Gonzalez from York at 38:27.00 for second place. Janssel Nunez came in third with a time of 39.56.44. First overall went to Richard Brienza from Queensborough who finished a full minute ahead of the field at 36:08.09.
The 4x100 Meter Relay was won by CCNY with Jemaal Alexander, Thierry Diessongo, Peter Dehazya, and Christopher Laing with a time of 42.72. York’s Michael Tomlin, Shaquille Hodge, Derrick Clanton, and Jesus Medina finished second with a time of 44.58 while Medgar Evers’ Jordan Tyson, Wendal Davis, Jomo Bullen, and Rasheen Oconnor finished next at 44.78. Overall, Queensborough’s Calvin Crawford, Khalil Gravesande, Silvanus Henry, and Rashaid Clarke nabbed silver at 44.48.
The 1,500 Meter Run was won by rookie John Pollina from Lehman with a time of 4:16.71. Hunter’s Christian Rojas and Walter Rodriguez rounded out the podium at 4:25.08 and 4:28.10, respectively.
In the 110 Meter Hurdles, Medgar Evers’ Wendal Davis took home the gold with a time of 16.50. Second was CCNY’s Jeckesan Mejia at 16.68 followed by his teammate Jonathan Elysee at 16.77. Overall, Jordan Clarke of the Bronx Broncos was first at 15.60.
CCNY’s Garnet Vanterpool and Bertrand Oubida took the top spots in the 400 Meter Dash at 50.80 and 50.89, respectively. Third place went to Dashaun Michie of Lehman at 51.89. Overall, Khalil Gravesande was first to finish at 50.25.
The top two spots of the 100 Meter Dash went to CCNY as well with Diessongo and Dehayza coming it at 10.73 and 10.81, respectively. Lehman’s Darian Livingston was third at 10.97.
In the 800 Meter Run, Medgar Evers’ William Joyette was victorious at 2:05.16. Hunter finished second and third with Rodriguez and Rojas coming in at 2:06.77 and 2:07.76, respectively.
The 400 Meter Hurdles was won by Hunter’s Diego Buen in 59.29. Medgar’s Davis was second at 1:01.10 while Lehman’s Michie finished third with a time of 1:04.70.
York’s Shaquille Hodge won the 200 Meter Dash with a time of 21.82. He was followed by Lehman’s Livingston and CCNY’s Diessongo at 22.14 and 22.17, respectively. Overall, second place went to KCC’s Michael Camacho with a time of 22.10.
Pollina took home another gold for Lehman in the 5,000 Meter Run with a time of 16:28.92. Over a minute later, Hunter’s Barbecho came in second at 18:12.48 and he was closely followed by third place finisher and teammate Rojas at 18:12.62. Overall, QCC’s Brienza was second with a time of 17:52.03.
Finishing the track events was the 4x400 Meter Relay. CCNY came out on top with Anthony Barnes, Vanterpool, Diessongo, and Oubida finishing in 3:28.03. Next to finish was York’s quartet of Medina, Wright, Hodge, and Ajani Kerr with a time of 3:30.56. Rounding out the podium was Medgar Evers’ Bullen, Davis, Rasheen Oconnor, and William Joyette at 3:32.85. Third place overall went to QCC’s Khalil Gravesande, Crawford, Silvanus Henry, and Steven Telamaque at 3:30.66.
In throwing action, the Hammer Throw saw CCNY’s Steve Baker take home the gold with a throw of 39.58m. Silver went to York’s Nosa Edionwe at 35.72m and bronze went to CCNY’s Mejia with a throw of 30.50m.
The Shot Put saw CCNY’s Mejia on top with a throw of 12.14m. Hunter’s Brandon Rust came in second with a distance of 11.44m while York’s Edionwe was third at 11.33m.
The Javelin Throw was won by CCNY’s Baker who launched it 47.73m. Medgar’s Jomo Bullen was second at 44.86m. CCNY’s Mejia rounded out the podium with a distance of 43.09m.
In the Discus Throw, York’s Edionwe broke through for gold with a throw of 33.87m. CCNY’s Baker and Mejia were second and third with distances of 32.56m and 30.62m, respectively.
Jumping action began with the High Jump. Daniel Geist took home gold when he flew 1.85m. Medgar Evers’ Bullen and Olabimpe Ologundudu tied for second at 1.70m to take home the rest of the podium. Overall, Queensborough’s Marvin Pinnock came in first at 1.91m.
In the Long Jump, CCNY’s Dehayza took gold at 6.53m. He out-flew York’s Roshane Wright and Lehman’s Pierre Francois at 6.45m and 6.12m, respectively. Overall, Pinnock finished in third at 6.20m.
The Triple Jump finished jumping events with former NJCAA All-American Francois taking home gold at 14.53m. York’s Michael Tomlin was second at 12.60m while CCNY’s Devin Corpus was third at 12.46m.
