CCNY Men Win Third Straight Championship

The City College of New York Beavers men's team won the 2013 CUNYAC/US Army Championship at Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island. The Beavers recorded their third straight championship and fourth in seven years. The field was competitive with strong times, heights, and distances that highlighted the quality of talent in the CUNY Athletic Conference.
 
“It’s exciting to win three in a row,” head coach Hugh Reid said. “We were hungry to win another championship this year and everyone stepped up and exceeded expectations.”
 
The first field event for the day was the Hammer Throw and CCNY’s Steve Baker edged out York’s Steve Burnett (32.00m) with a throw of 33.15m to claim gold. Rounding out the top three was Baker’s teammate Samuel Nkama with a throw of 29.80m.
 
The next event was the men’s High Jump. Medgar Evers’ Kadeem Campbell took home gold with a jump of 1.76m. Finishing in second was teammate Jomo Bullen with a score of 1.71m.
 
In the men’s Shot Put, Medgar Evers’ Elston Alexis recorded a throw of 14.61m, followed by teammate and brother Leston Alexis, who had a throw of 12.58m. For the bronze, CCNY’s Samuel Nkama recorded a score of 12.46m while Kingsborough’s Amin Garcia finished with 12.47m. 
 
The last field event for the championship was the Triple Jump. Taking home gold was CCNY’s Samuen Nkama with a jump of 13.48m. Following him for silver and bronze was Medgar Evers’ Kadeem Campbell (13.25m) and York’s Michael Tomlin (12.87m), respectively. Kingsborough’s Kester Chase had an overall score of 13.99m.

Next would begin with track events. In the 4X100M relay, CCNY’s ‘A’ team consisting of Jemaal Alexander, Garnet Vanterpool, Peter Dehazya and Thierry Diessongo snagged gold with a time of 42.92. Following in second and third place was Medgar Evers ‘A” (44.69) and York’s ‘A’ (45.05), respectively.
 
The next event was the 1,500 meter run. CCNY’s Bertrand Oubida grabbed gold with a time of 4:18.31 followed by Staten Island’s Andrew Pate’s time of 4:20.10. Rounding out the top three places was Hunter’s John Aiken who finished at 4:25.99. Bronx’s Derrick Tucker also had a solid run at 4:22.69.
 
In the 400 meters, CCNY’s Garnet Vanderpool edged out Hunter’s Javier Levy (50.39) for gold with a time of 50.26. Finishing in third and achieving bronze at 50.67 was York’s Shaquille Hodge. Queensborough’s Jovanni Parkinson ran the race in 50.63.
 
Following the 400 meters was 110M hurdles, which was won by Medgar Evers’ Junior Kennedy at 15.33. Snagging silver and bronze medals were CCNY’s Robens Bien-Aime with a time of 17.09 and Lehman’s Ibrahima Souare at 18.27, respectively. Kingsborough’s Amin Garcia finished the race with a time of 15.01.
 
Up next was the 800 meters. Taking home gold was CCNY’s Bertrand Oubida at 2:00.34 followed by Hunter’s Mickail Castro at 2:03.39. Finishing in third was Staten Island’s Andrew Pate who came across the finish line at 2:06.06. Queensborough’s Nathan Cyrille finished at 2:00.79.
 
The 200 meters dash was captured by York’s Shaquille Hodge, who finished with a time of 22.30. CCNY runners Garnet Vanterpool (22.40) and Thierry Diessongo (22.52) were awarded silver and bronze medals, respectively. Queensborough’s Michael-Fritz Parkinson finished with a time of 22.47.
 
The second to last track event was the 5,000 meter run. Hunter’s Christian Rojas recorded the gold with a time of 16:47.87, followed by teammate John Aiken (17:21.87) and Staten Island’s Samuel Obisanya (17:23.95). Queensborough’s Zachary Merced completed the race at 16:41.23.
 
The last track event of the championship was the 4X400M relay. CCNY’s ‘A’ team consisting of Donald Dibari, Bertrand Oubida, Anthony Barnes and Garnet Vanterpool took home gold with a time of 3:24.26. Following in second and third place was York’s ‘A” (3:34.11) and Hunter’s ‘A’ (3:35.40), respectively.
 
For his efforts, Kadeem Campbell from Medgar Evers was named the 2013 CUNYAC/US Army Most Valuable Performer. He compiled 31.5 individual points while finishing in the top five in five events.
 
“I am very happy” Campbell said. “I can not thank the coaches enough…they played a major role in my success." This is the second straight year and third time overall he has won this award.
