The City College of New York Men's Outdoor Track & Field team defended their CUNY Athletic Conference / U.S. Army Outdoor Track & Field Championship at Icahn Stadium on Sunday. Medgar Evers College was strong as well, with 175 points, as the Cougars took home the runner-up trophy for the third consecutive year.

"We allied hard this year, we had a group of fighters that wanted to maintain the title more than anything," said CCNY head coach Hugh Reid, whose men's team is 4-4 in two full years of CUNYAC Indoor & Outdoor Championships dating back to the 2011 Indoor meet. "Sergio Soto, a senior, wanted to go out with a bang and won the 5,000 today. He among others veterans were catalysts for the younger runners today."

Medgar Evers' Kadeem Campbell, a field event specialist earned the men's Championship Most Valuable Performer award with 42 points in the two-day meet, scoring points in five events (he competed in six), including a victory in the Triple Jump. Campbell also won the MVP award during his freshman season in 2010.

In the four-year college team standings, York College placed third with 88 points, while Hunter College (55) and Lehman (42) rounded out the field.

As Reid, alluded to, the Beavers had tremendous performances on the day, led by sprinters Jemaal Alexander and Peter Dehayza, who were the first two finishers among the senior college's in both the 100 Meter Dash and 200 Meter Dash events. In the 100 Meter Dash event, Alexander recorded a time of 11.04, with Dehazya finishing right behind him at 11.08. In the 200, Alexander recorded an impressive finishing time of 22.44, with Dehayza crossing the line at 22.88. The 4x100 Meter Relay squad of Alexander, Dehayza, Albert Huggins, and Bakary Touray finished in first place with a time of 43.57.

CCNY's Sergio Soto was the dominant men's distance runner of the meet, as he won the Men's 5000 Meter Run with a time of 17:21.29, after his 10,000 Meter Run on Day one of the Championships. He also claimed second place in the 1500 Meter Run, behind Hunter's Justin Lee (4:14.62).

Only one championship meet record was broken on the day, as QCC's Younes Benzaid, the NJCAA National Runner-up became the new Men's 800 Meter record holder with a time of 1:54.56. The previous record was held by York's Michael Brown in 2006 (1:56.75). York was led by junior Tarik Weekes, who was second overall to Benzaid and first among senior colleges in the 400-meter dash in 49.50.  Weekes was also fourth overall and first among senior colleges in the 800-meter run in a time of 1:59.61.

For the three participating Community Colleges, Queensborough CC was dominant with 213 points, while Kingsborough CC scored 98 points and Bronx CC trailed with 31 points.

We had some really good sprinters this year, we had a 1-2 finish in the 400 Dash and we had a solid compliment of distance runners around Younes [Benzaid]," said longtime QCC head coach Chris Olmeltchenko. "We had a nice group of expereinced athletes this year to go along with our rookies. I'm really proud of this team."
