FLUSHING, NY -- The City University of New York Athletic Conference announced its All-Stars for the 2010-2011 Indoor Track and Field seasons on Tuesday afternoon, and the City College of New York men’s and women’s track squads were well-represented with 13 selections (58 overall). CCNY’s Paul Dedewo was named the conference’s Men’s Performer of the Year, while Hunter’s Lizzy Mahoney earned the Women’s Performer of the Year award. Both MVP’s are only sophomores, giving CUNYAC Track & Field a positive outlook for the future.
“I feel honored and grateful to be named CUNYAC’S Performer of the Year,” said Dedewo. “Through hard work and dedication, I was able to accomplish many special things during this indoor season, and I’m hoping to have even more success as we make the transition into outdoor season. I am also extremely proud of my teammates for their hard work this year, and I want to thank my coaching staff for their terrific guidance throughout the year.”
Two sprinters were named Rookies of the Year, as Lehman female standout Taofequt Ali and Medgar Evers’ Jomo Bullen were honored by the Conference coaches. Additionally, CCNY Head Coach Hugh Reid, who led two teams to CUNYAC titles back on February 28th, was named Coach of the Year for both men and women by his peers. On the women’s side – Heather Ruger – who is also a member of the women’s soccer team at CCNY, was give the Sportsmanship Award and Medgar Evers’ Leston Alexis won the honor in the men’s league.
“I am truly blessed and humbled to receive the Coach of the Year honors for both the Men's team and the Women’s team for the 2010-2011 indoor season,” said Reid. “These awards are considerably special to me because they were attained in my first year with the CCNY program. This season has been a rebuilding season for CCNY; as we tried to rebuild confidences, team character, and a respect for the sport. Like our mascot, I tried to build a dam with various significant people, all of whom I would like to thank, including the student-athletes, my assistant coach Mark Hurst, and City College’s administrators, coaches, staff, fans, and alumni, and our families for supporting us and believing in us.”
