FLUSHING, N.Y. - The 2024-25 CUNYAC women's basketball All-Stars and major awards were announced Thursday morning. The All-Star teams and major awards are voted upon by the league's head coaches.
Baruch senior Mia Castillo and Hunter junior Alexa Charles were voted as Co-Players of the Year. Brooklyn's Ameea Daniel was selected as Rookie of the Year, while Hunter's John Garrett was voted the Coach of the Year. Jennifer Metra of Medgar Evers is the recipient of the Sportsmanship Award.
Co-Players of the Year
Mia Castillo, Baruch
Castillo earns the award for the second time in her career as she was also Player of the Year in 2023-24. This season, Castillo leads the CUNYAC and NCAA Division III in scoring (27.3 ppg) while also leading the conference in assists (6.0 assists per game) and steals (5.1 steals per game. She ranks fourth nationally in assists per game and first in steals. Castillo, who became the CUNYAC's all-time leading scorer in women's basketball on February 11 against Medgar Evers, now has 2,335 career points. She also set an NCAA Division III record for career triple-doubles with seven in 2024-25.
Alexa Charles, Hunter
Charles, who led the Hawks to the CUNYAC regular season title, ranks second nationally and in the CUNYAC with her 26.8 ppg average. She also leads the conference in rebounding, grabbing 10.6 rebounds per contest, and is third in steals (4.7 spg) and fifth in blocked shots (1.1 bpg). Charles ranks third nationally in steals per game and is eighth in Division III with her 16 double-doubles. She was named USBWA Division III Player of the Week on February 4.
Rookie of the Year: Ameea Daniel, Brooklyn
Daniel, a six-time CUNYAC Rookie of the Week, has appeared in 18 games for the Bulldogs, who advanced to the CUNYAC title game for the 10th straight season Tuesday night. She is averaging 9.7 points and 6.7 rebounds for Brooklyn in 2024-25, scoring in double figures on nine occasions and registering four double-doubles.
Coach of the Year: John Garrett, Hunter
Garrett earns Coach of the Year after guiding the Hawks to a 19-5 regular season record and the CUNYAC regular season championship with a 13-1 record after being selected fourth in the preseason coaches' poll. Hunter, which has a pair of All-Star selections, is making its first appearance in the CUNYAC title game since 2020 on Thursday and seeking its first title since 2019.
