Brooklyn, John Jay Host Women's Basketball First Round Games Saturday

- The 2025 CUNYAC Women's Basketball Championship begins on Saturday with a pair of first round contests.  Third-seeded and defending champion Brooklyn (14-11, 10-4 CUNYAC) hosts Medgar Evers (3-17, 3-11) in one opening round contest, while fourth-seeded John Jay (11-14, 9-5) entertains No. 5 seed Lehman (11-14, 7-7).

The Brooklyn-Medgar Evers winner wlll travel to second-seeded Baruch (14-10, 11-3) for one semifinal on Tuesday, February 25, while the winner between the Bloodhounds and Lightning will hit the road to face top-seeded Hunter (19-5, 13-1) in the other semi.

Brooklyn swept the Cougars during the regular season, recording a 63-53 road win in January before downing Medgar 96-34 at home just over a week ago on February 14.

The Bulldogs, who have won out of their last 10, including a win over regular season champion Hunter, are balanced at the top of the scoring column.  Anna Kitch is scoring at a 12.0 ppg clip while grabbing 9.2 rebounds per contest, fourth-best in the conference.  Alina Estrella is recording 10.9 points per game, while Dior Dorsey is adding 10.3 points per outing.

Medgar Evers closed out the regular season by being narrowly edged by John Jay 66-63.  The Cougars boast a pair of double-figure scorers in Alexis Davis and Sheily Quezada.  Davis leads MEC with her 13.7 ppg average, while Quezada is recording 12.1 points and a team-best 9.7 rebounds per contest, third in the CUNYAC.  She also leads the conference in blocked shots with 65.

The Bloodhounds took both meetings with Lehman in 2024-25, winning 65-46 in the Bronx in mid-January and 64-49 at home on February 12.  John Jay has captured 12 straight meetings in the series with the Lightning.

John Jay has won four in a row.  Senior Ashley Zeolla leads the Bloodhounds in scoring (16.0 ppg) and is second in rebounding (7.4 rpg), ranking fifth in CUNYAC scoring.  Michaela Lattimore is recording 14.6 ppg and grabbing a team-best 9.9 rebounds per outing, second in the league.  

Lehman features the conference's No. 3 scorer in Heaven Figueroa.  Figueroa is averaging 24.5 ppg while grabbing 8.8 rebounds per contest.  Emily Kennedy is adding 14.2 ppg and grabbing 7.8 rebounds per game, while Mush Muniru is adding 7.9 ppg.  The Lightning are looking to bounce back from a three-game slide to end the season.
