FLUSHING, N.Y. (March 1, 2024) – The City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) has announced its all-star awards and team for the 2023-24 women’s indoor track & field season.
Medgar Evers claimed three of the four major awards, as
Nana Samake was named Track Athlete of the Year,
Desireth Ramirez was voted Rookie of the Year, and first-year head coach
Hugh Reid was selected Coach of the Year. In addition, Hunter’s
Daria Niebrzydowski was voted Field Athlete of the Year.
Track Athlete of the Year: Nana Samake, Medgar Evers
Samake was one of the top distance runners in the conference during the indoor season, owning the league’s top times in the 800m (2:38.95). and 5,000m (21:45.09) events. At the conference championship meet, she earned gold in the 800m, silver in the mile, silver in the 4x400m relay and bronze in the 3,000m.
Field Athlete of the Year: Daria Niebrzydowski, Hunter
Niebrzydowski produced a strong indoor campaign, owning the league’s top mark in the high jump (1.52m) while ranking No. 2 in the triple jump (9.85m). At the conference championship, she earned gold in the high jump for a second straight season and silver in the triple jump for a second consecutive campaign.
Rookie of the Year: Desireth Ramirez, Medgar Evers
Ramirez turned in a strong rookie campaign for the Cougars. She had a solid performance in helping Medgar Evers claim the conference championship, earning gold in the 200m, bronze in the 60m and bronze in the 60mH.
Coach of the Year: Hugh Reid, Medgar Evers
In his first season at Medgar Evers, Reid led the Cougars to their first CUNYAC Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championship in 20 years.
