HISTORY! Medgar Evers Wins FIRST-EVER Men’s Indoor Track & Field Championship

NEW YORK, N.Y. (Feb. 18, 2024) – For the first time in program history, the Medgar Evers Cougars are men’s indoor track & field champions, winning the 2024 CUNYAC Men’s Indoor Track & Field Championship at the Nike Track & Field Center.
 
The Cougars turned in a strong performance under the guidance of head coach Hugh Reid to earn conference bragging rights for the first time in school history. Medgar Evers finished with 151.5 points, followed by Hunter (114), Lehman (79.5), CCNY (74) and York.
 
Medgar’s Rupert Luard-Charles was named the meet’s Most Valuable Performer. The rookie produced a gold medal effort in the 400-meter dash (51.73) while taking silver in the 200m dash (23.42) and silver in the long jump (6.01m).

Medgar’s Jaheim Johnson was the meet’s top runner in the 200m dash, recording a time of 23.02. Jerome Hodges won gold in the high jump with a leap of 1.80m, while teammate Chrisnel Nicolas earned gold in the pole vault with a mark of 2.69m. Dontay Washington was the top senior college runner in the 60m hurdles, turning in a time of 9.75.
 
Hunter’s Mateo Penafiel won gold in two events, including the mile (4:49.86) and the 3,000m run (9:57.34), while teammate Jonathan Cauchi was the top performer in the shot put with a heave of 11.85m.
 
Lehman’s Kenneth Davis produced a gold medal effort in the weight throw with a toss of 14.23m, while teammate Ismael Barry turned in a gold medal performance in the 60m dash with a time of 7.22.
 
CCNY’s Isaiah Slater won a pair of jumping events, taking gold in the triple jump (12.58m) and the long jump (6.11m). Toufique Mahmud earned gold in the 800m run with a time of 2:10.25.
