FLUSHING, N.Y. (Feb. 14, 2024) - The City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) is excited to reveal its end-of-year awards for the 2023-24 men’s swimming & diving season, as voted upon by the league’s head coaches.
Baruch claimed two of the three major awards, as
Bennett Maczka was voted Swimmer of the Year while head coach
Charles Lampasso earned Coach of the Year accolades. In addition, Brooklyn’s
Michael Kravets was named the league’s Rookie of the Year.
Swimmer of the Year: Bennett Maczka, Baruch
Maczka was a great addition to the Bearcats in just his first and only season at the Lexington Avenue campus. In the regular season, he produced the league’s top times in four events, including the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle.
The graduate student shined at the conference championship and was named the championship’s Most Valuable Performer. Maczka competed in seven events over the course of the weekend, winning gold in every race while setting a new championship record in each. Perhaps his most impressive performance was in the 500 free, as Maczka completed the race in 4:42.86, smashing the previous standard of 4:49.17 set by Staten Island’s Vlad Romanov in 2012. His performance was also the fastest time in the history of the CUNY Athletic Conference, smashing the previous best of 4:45.52 set by Lehman's Jason Bogle in 1992.
Rookie of the Year: Michael Kravets, Brooklyn
Kravets produced an impressive rookie campaign for the Bulldogs, culminating in gold-medal performances in the 1650-yard freestyle (18:00.51) and 200-yard butterfly (1:59.30) events.
Coach of the Year: Charles Lampasso, Baruch
Lampasso earned yet another Coach of the Year award in his 20th season as head coach, receiving the honor for a sixth consecutive year and a ninth time in his career. He led Baruch to a 9-1 record, including a 3-0 mark against conference opponents. Most importantly, Lampasso led the Bearcats to a sixth straight conference championship.
