BROOKLYN, N.Y. (May 8, 2023) – The Kingsborough Community College Wave are CUNYAC Community College Baseball Champions once again, defeating Bronx Community College, 14-4, Monday morning at Maimonides Park.
The Wave turned in a strong performance in seven innings to win a second straight conference title and the seventh in program history.
Thomas Laino, a 2023 CUNYAC All-Star, led the way offensively for the Wave, going 3-for-4 at the plate with four runs scored and two runs batted in. For his efforts, he was named the championship’s Most Valuable Player.

Jonathan Fonesca earned the win on the mound. He tossed 4.1 innings, surrendering two earned runs on seven hits while striking out four. At the plate, he produced three RBI.
Kingsborough got on the board in the opening frame, thanks to a two-out RBI single from
Nicholas Piazza, the 2023 CUNYAC Community College Baseball Rookie of the Year.
Bronx answered in the second inning, when
Leonardo Francisco rounded the bases while taking advantage of a Kingsborough error at home plate to tie the contest.
The Wave countered in the bottom of the inning, plating three runs to regain the lead.
Luciano LoBello scored on an error at home plate by the Broncos followed by Laino driving in a pair on a triple to right field. Kingsborough extended its advantage in the fourth inning with five more runs, coming on just one hit and five walks. The lone hit was a three-run double to left field from Fonesca.
The Broncos cut into the margin in the fifth inning with a pair of runs, thanks to a RBI single from
Angel Calderon and a run scored by CUNYAC All-Star,
Steven Correa.
Kingsborough answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame. The Wave took advantage of three consecutive wild pitches that scored CUNYAC All-Stars
Aldo Thomas, Laino and
Justin Ramsey. Later in the inning, Piazza scored on a fielder’s choice from
Bryan Duran.
Bronx added another score in the seventh inning following a RBI single from
Samuel De La Rosa that scored
Wilkin Ruan. The Wave matched the run in the bottom of the inning following a bunt from Piazza to score Laino and solidify the victory.
Five Kingsborough players recorded a hit in the win, which Laino (4), Piazza (2), Ramsey (2) and
Yoskar Guzman (2) finished with two or more runs scored.
For the Broncos, W. Ruan went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored, while
Yoskar Almonte recorded a pair of hits and one run batted in.
Kingsborough will now turn its attention to the NJCAA Region 15 Baseball Championship, taking on No. 1 Suffolk as the No. 4 seed in the first round on May 11 at 3:00 p.m.
