Hostos Chosen to Repeat as League Champions in 2023-24 Community College Women’s Basketball Preseason Poll; Preseason Players to Watch Announced

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Nov. 3, 2023) - The City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) has announced its annual preseason poll for the 2023-24 community college women’s basketball season, and Hostos was chosen as conference favtoes as voted upon by the league's head coaches. Head coaches were not permitted to vote for their own program.
 
The 2024 CUNYAC Community College Women’s Basketball Championship is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, Feb. 13, with semifinal action at Kingsborough Community College. The championship game is slated for Friday, Feb. 16.
 
Hostos was awarded 25 points and five first-place votes. The Caimans went 20-5 overall last season and a perfect 12-0 record in league play, capturing a sixth consecutive conference championship.
 
BMCC, last season’s runner-up, was awarded 18 points, followed by Kingsborough (15), Queensborough (15), Bronx (11) and LaGuardia (6).

CUNYAC Community College Men’s Basketball Preseason Player to Watch
Emily Kennedy, So., BMCC – Kennedy produced a strong freshman campaign for the Panthers. A five-time CUNYAC Rookie of the Week honoree, she led BMCC in points per game (19.5) and steals (50) while ranking second in rebounds (125), rebounds per game (6.6), assists (37). Her performance landed her a spot on the CUNYAC All-Star Team.
 
Demaris Andrews, So., Hostos – Andrews lands at Hostos after transferring from BMCC. She averaged 16.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per contest with the Panthers last season and was named CUNYAC Rookie of the Year.
 
Nayla Walters, So., Queensborough – Walters was a force for the Tigers last season, averaging 13.4 points and 17.5 rebounds per contest. A NJCAA Division III National Player of the Week honoree, her 17.5 rebounds per game ranked No. 1 in all of NJCAA Division III, while her 99 offensive rebounds ranked No. 20 nationally. For her efforts, she earned a spot on the CUNYAC All-Star Team.
