FLUSHING, N.Y. (Nov. 3, 2023) - The City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) has announced its annual preseason poll for the 2023-24 community college men’s basketball season, and Hostos was chosen as conference champions, as voted upon by the league's head coaches. Head coaches were not permitted to vote for their own program.
The 2024 CUNYAC Community College Men’s Basketball Championship is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, Feb. 14, with semifinal action at Kingsborough Community College. The championship game is slated for Friday, Feb. 16.
The Caimans, who’ve won two of the last three conference titles, received 23 points and four first-place votes. Hostos went 15-14 overall last season with an 8-2 mark against conference opponents to earn the No. 2 seed in the tournament, suffering a loss in the semifinal round.
The defending CUNYAC champions, Queensborough, were chosen to finish second with 21 points and the two first-place tallies. BMCC, last season’s runner-up, was picked third with 18 points, followed by Kingsborough (14), Bronx (8) and LaGuardia (6).

CUNYAC Community College Men’s Basketball Preseason Player to Watch
Herbert Gary, So., Bronx – Gary put together a stellar 2022-2023 campaign for the Broncos. He notched a double-double in 60 percent of Bronx's games (15 of 25) and led the Broncos with a rebounding average of 11.3 caroms per contest. Those 11.3 boards per game led all players in CUNY and placed Gary 7th nationally in the NJCAA. His 35 total steals also led all Broncos players.
Ysaia Marte, So., BMCC – Marte was an All-CUNY performer last season, leading the squad in points (276), points per game (11.5), field goal percentage (.459), steals (52) and steals per game (2.2). Most importantly, he helped BMCC reach the conference championship game.
Justice Carrington, So., Hostos - Carrington made an immediate impact on the Hostos lineup. A CUNYAC Rookie of the Week honoree, he played in every game, reaching double figures in 17 contests. He also ranked ninth nationally in blocked shots (54). For his efforts, he was named CUNYAC Rookie of the Year.
Bryan Godette, So., Queensborough – Godette appeared in 22 games last season and was a contributing member of the 2023 squad that won the program’s first championship in 20 years.
