BROOKLYN, N.Y. (May 4, 2022) – Kingsborough Community College cruised to a 10-0 victory over Bronx Community College to win the 2022 CUNYAC/Pepsi Community College Championship at the iconic Maimonides Park.
The Wave dominated from opening pitch, claiming the victory in a rematch of the 2019 championship final. With the win, Kingsborough secured its sixth title in program history and the team's first since 2017.
Kingsborough, back in the championship game for a second straight season, plated seven runs through the first three innings of play and never looked back.
The Wave got on the scoreboard in the opening frame, taking advantage of a Broncos miscue with two outs on the board, as CUNYAC All-Star
Bryan Lopez rounded the bases from second to give Kingsborough a 1-0 lead.
Kingsborough broke the game open in the second inning, scoring five runs.
Romeo Roberts rounded the bases on a RBI single from
Aldo Thomas, who scored two batters later on a two-run RBI double from
Justin Ramsey, the 2022 CUNYAC Rookie of the Year. Ramsey later scored on a RBI single from
Johnny Parker to make it a 5-0 score. The Wave tacked on another run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly from Lopez.
In the fifth inning, Kingsborough expanded its margin, thanks to a two-run home run from Thomas, his second homer of the season. Ramsey notched his third RBI of the afternoon two batters later to secure the victory in five innings.
Francesco Bonvini showed why he was selected as the CUNYAC Pitcher of the Year. The right-hander was sensational all afternoon, surrendering only one hit with seven strikeouts in the complete game victory. For his efforts, the Parma, Italy native was named the championship's Most Valuable Player.
"The team played very well," said Wave head coach
Brian Dowd, the 2022 CUNYAC the Bonvini was very solid on the mound. He's our ace and he did what he was supposed to do. Offensively, we got off to a quick start and that's what we do. We're a really good offensive team. They did everything we expected them to do."
"It's amazing to bring the championship back to Kingsborough," said Bonvini. "I'm happy and proud of my teammates."
