FLUSHING, N.Y. (May 3, 2022) – On the heels of Thursday's CUNYAC/HSS Men's Tennis Championship final, the City University of New York Athletic Conference and Hospital for Special Surgery have announced their 2022 All-Stars for men's tennis, as voted upon by the league's head coaches.
Baruch cleaned up on the major awards, as
Christopher Tham was voted Player of the Year,
Nicholas Santiago was named Rookie of the Year, and head coach
Gregory Wyzykowski was selected as Coach of the Year. In addition, Hunter's
Anil Singh was the recipient of the Sportsmanship Award.
Player of the Year – Christopher Tham, Jr, Baruch
Tham has been the league's most dominant performer this season, boasting an 8-1 overall record in singles, including a 7-1 mark in the No. 1 spot. Against league competition, the Bayside native didn't drop a set and saw his only regular season loses come against a strong NJCU program. Tham also sported an identical doubles record of 8-1.
"Player of the Year is the biggest honor any athlete can obtain," said Tham. "All year long, even the offseason, so many of us are working hard to be the best version of ourselves on and off the court so we can win prestigious awards just like this one. A big thank you to the Baruch coaching staff and the rest of my teammates for pushing me and leading me to this point in my athletic career. This is a remarkable milestone for me."
Rookie of the Year – Nicholas Santiago, Fr, Baruch
Santiago was impressive in his debut campaign, posting a 9-1 singles record during the regular season. The rookie went unbeaten at No. 3 singles (5-0), highlighted by an unblemished 3-0 mark against CUNYAC opponents. He also produced a strong 8-2 record in doubles, going undefeated at top-flight and No. 3 doubles.
"I am very grateful for this award. I would like to thank my teammates, coaches, the athletic department, and my family for all the support this year. I appreciate all of you," said Santiago.
Coach of the Year – Gregory Wyzykowski, Baruch
Wyzykowski has led the Bearcats to their third straight CUNYAC regular season championship since taking over as head coach in 2018. Without having a full lineup throughout the season, he managed to guide the program to an undefeated conference record.
"It is an honor to be named Men's Tennis Coach of The Year," said Wyzykowski. "The support of Heather our Athletic Director, the entire athletic department as well as the hard work of my assistant coach Annie and all the members of the men's tennis team make it possible. Thank you to all who have supported us this season."
