Baruch’s Dayan Ordabayev Named CUNYAC/HSS Scholar-Athlete of the Month

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) has selected Baruch College swimmer, Dayan Ordabayev, as the CUNYAC/Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) Scholar-Athlete of the Month for January 2022.

Ordabayev, a native of Kazakhstan, is arguably the CUNYAC’s top performer, majoring in psychology with a 3.76 grade-point average. His success in the classroom has helped the Baruch men’s swimming team earn College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association (CSCAA) Scholar-Athlete All-America Team honors for a fifth straight year.

"CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete of the Month is a great achievement as a student-athlete,” said Ordabayev. “I always make sure that I stay on top of my things in school as well as putting the maximum effort in my races and practices."

In the pool, Ordabayev guided the Bearcats to a perfect 3-0 record in dual meets, earning victories over Sarah Lawrence (1/15), Lehman (1/17) and Brooklyn (1/19). Following his strong performance against conference foes, he was named CUNYAC Male Swimmer of the Week.

"Dayan is a team leader for our program, said head coach Charles Lampasso, the 2022 CUNYAC Men's Swimming & Diving Coach of the Year. “He sets the tone while also conducting himself as an example to our younger swimmers."

Voted Male Performer of the Year, Ordabayev proved worthy of the distinction at the 2022 CUNYAC/Healthfirst Swimming & Diving Championships. The senior earned seven goal medals over the course of the weekend, earning Most Valuable Performer recognition. Most importantly, he led Baruch to its fourth consecutive conference championship and seventh overall in program history.

With his demonstration of excellence in the pool and in the classroom, Ordabayev embodies what it means to be a NCAA Division III student-athlete.

“My advice to future athletes is to never give up on your dreams, set the goal and chase it until it is conquered, said Ordabayev. “Charge forward at all costs."
