2021-22 CUNYAC/HSS Women’s Basketball All-Stars Announced

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Feb. 21, 2022) - The City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) and longtime sponsor Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) are excited to announce its 2021-22 CUNYAC Women’s Basketball All-Star Teams.

Brooklyn’s Chanel Jemmott was named CUNYAC Player of the Year for a second time in her career, while Baruch’s Mia Castillo was voted the league’s Rookie of the Year. In addition, Bulldogs head coach Alex Lang was tabbed CUNYAC Coach of the Year.

Player of the Year: Chanel Jemmott, Brooklyn
Jemmott becomes the eighth player in league history to be named Player of the Year in consecutive seasons.

Voted the Preseason Player of the Year, Jemmott lived up to the citation in 2021-22. The forward averaged a double-double all season, notching 18.5 points and 11.5 rebounds in just 26.3 minutes per game. A three-time CUNYAC Player of the Week honoree, Jemmott produced 11 double-double performances and nine outings with 20 or more points.

"I am extremely appreciative for being acknowledged as the player of the year," said Jemmott. "It feels great when hard work pays off. I want to thank my teammates and coaches for constantly pushing me, I couldn’t have been successful without any of them. Also grateful for the family and friends I have in my life for being a great support system to me."

Rookie of the Year: Mia Castillo, Baruch
Castillo is the first Bearcat in program history to earn CUNYAC Rookie of the Year recognition since Giovanni Licorish in the 1992-93 campaign.

A five-time CUNYAC Rookie of the Week, Castillo made an immediate impact on the league in her first season in a Bearcat unform. The rookie was the team’s top performer, pacing the squad in points (321), rebounds (147), assists (73) and blocks (24).

Castillo has scored in double figures 16 times, including six games of 20 or more. In her very first collegiate contest, the Pleasantville native recorded a 30-point triple-double.

"I want to thank my teammates and my coaches for challenging me to become a better player," said Castillo. "I am very honored and humbled to represent Baruch and receive this award."

Coach of the Year: Alex Lang, Brooklyn
Lang earns Coach of the Year accolades for a second straight season and the seventh time in his career. He led Brooklyn to its third regular season title in four years, while going unbeaten in CUNYAC play with a perfect 12-0 record for a second consecutive year.

"I appreciate being recognized, however any awards are all about the group as we had a total team effort in achieving our great regular season finish," said Lang. "Our coaching staff and our team showed effort, resiliency and a dedication to each other and they make me all grateful to be their head coach."
