CUNYAC Announces 30th Anniversary ADA Webinar Panel Discussion

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The City University of New York Athletic Conference, in collaboration with CUNY's Coalition of Students with Disabilities, is set to host a webinar panel discussion on July 26 to recognize the 30th anniversary of the American's with Disabilities Act. The session will broadcast live on Zoom at 10 a.m. To register to attend the webinar, click here.

The panel, led by CUNY's Inclusive Sports Advisor Ryan Martin, will feature CUNY student-athletes, both past and present, with a focus centered on the significance of the ADA and its impact on their athletic careers. The session will broadcast 30 years to the day the ADA was signed into law in 1990.

Joining the panel are Christopher Rosa, CUNY's Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Inclusion Initiatives, Erin Thomas, a student at Queensborough Community College and member of CUNY's women's wheelchair basketball team, Garrison Red, a student at Medgar Evers College and a USA Paralympic powerlifter, Katherine Valdez, a student at York College and member of CUNYs women's wheelchair basketball team, and Christopher St. Remy, a future student-athlete at Queens and member of the CUNY men's wheelchair basketball squad.

"CUNY Athletics is proud to announce this webinar celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the ADA. This webinar will highlight the Inclusive Sports program being organized at CUNY, as well as CUNY's ties to the Paralympic movement and the impact of the ADA on people with disabilities," Martin said.

The webinar is yet another effort from CUNY's Inclusive and Adaptive Sports platform, an initiative established in 2017 with the goal of providing an opportunity for 11,000 CUNY students with disabilities to participate in four sports — track and field, swimming, tennis and basketball, the first sport the University has adopted as part of this collegiate model.

Since its inception, the CUNY Athletic Conference has hosted several wheelchair basketball clinics across CUNY campuses, including a recent clinic in conjunction with the New York Knick-affiliate New York Rolling Knicks. In addition, CUNY is set to join the National Wheelchair Basketball Association in the Fall.
