NEW YORK, N.Y. (May 12, 2019) - In an unreal scenario, the City College of New York and Lehman College were tabbed as co-champions Sunday at the 2019 CUNYAC/Army ROTC Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Icahn Stadium at Randall's Island.
It marks the first time in league history that the same two teams have shared the indoor and outdoor title in the same season. Both teams finished with 132 points.
"It feels fantastic. For the seniors, they get to go as champions, regardless of a tie or not," said CCNY Head Coach
Demetrius Murray. "It's kudos to the coaching staff that put in the work that they did. We all tried really hard to galvanize this team. I can't say enough about how proud I am of this team."
Lehman Head Coach
Hugh Reid uttered similar remarks: "I think the athletes did a phenomenal job. Everyone came focused on trying to win. I am just happy to come out with the win."
CCNY's
Joseph Espinoza and
Merlin Padilla, Jr. went 1-2 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and 5,000-meter run. Espinoza ran to respective times of 10:31.61 and 17:09.89, while Padilla individually finished at 10:31.91 and 17:13.45.
Albert Leonardo placed third in the steeplechase, clocking a 10:46.53.
Jules Day got the gold for the Beavers in the 400-meter dash (51.26).
Timothy Lin won the 100-meter dash in 11.81 and came in second in the 200-meter dash (24.24).
Justin Herbert and
Richard Kish took the top two spots on the podium in the long jump, posting marks of 6.08 and 5.68 meters, respectively.
Christopher Peguero-Liriano achieved a second-place finish in the discus with a throw of 27.19 meters.
Lehman's
Aaron Dickens had an array of Top 5 finishes, en route to being tabbed as the championship's Most Valuable Performer. He claimed gold in the 400-meter hurdles, running a time of 1:01.46, and finished as the runner-up in the 110-meter hurdles at 19.24.
"It's just really unreal. I know that us and CCNY put it all on the line today. We just made sure to put in 100 percent," Dickens commented.
Hakeem Mowatt sprinted to a winning time in the 200-meter dash (23.99) and placed second in the 400-meter dash (51.42).
Xavier Abreu ran a top time of 18.54 in the 110-hurdles.
The team of Dickens, Mowatt, Abreu and
Lloyd Richards bested the field in the 4 x 400-meter relay, clocking a 3:34.63.
In the field events, Lehman's
Kuron Williams had the best throw in the javelin competition, recording a mark of 36.15 meters.
Hunter finished in a close third in the race for the title with 102 points. The Hawks excelled in the distance events, led by
Jeffry Guerrero's first-place time of 35:36.68 in the 10,000-meter run.
Kyle Harris was second in the 1,500-meter run (4:20.88) and third in the 5,000-meter run (17:15.73).
Griffin Kearney took third in the 800-meter run at 2:09.05.
Glenn Collaku won the discus for the Hawks with a toss of 29.39 meters.
Marco Vargas earned silver in the javelin, after a second-place heave of 35.77 meters.
CSI's
Liam McMunn got top billing in the 800- and 1,500-meter run, with respective times of 2:05.89 and 4:19.66.
David Outlaw was the runner-up in the 800 at 2:08.65.
York's grouping of
Andrew George,
Shevon Walker,
Rojhn Miller and
Keshawn Ross clocked a winning time of 45.53 in the 4 x 100-meter relay. Miller also sprinted to a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash, running an 11.83.
Dammon Trimmingham topped the podium in the shot put with a gold-medal throw of 11.16 meters.
In that same event, Medgar Evers'
Brandon Bell and
Neron George individually finished second and third, with heaves of 10.53 and 10.28 meters.
