FLUSHING, N.Y. (Apr. 27, 2018) - On Friday, the City University of New York Athletic Conference and Hospital for Special Surgery announced their 2018 All-Star men's tennis selections, as determined in a polling of the league's coaches.
Baruch's
Marco Gobbato and
Gregory Wyzykowski earned Player and Coach of the Year honors, respectively. Brooklyn's
Rohan Mathur was named the Rookie of the Year.
Player of the Year - Marco Gobbato, Sr, Baruch
Gobbato has shined in his final year at Baruch, posting a league-best 11-2 singles record (7-0 at No. 2 flight). He also completed the regular season with a flawless 6-0 singles mark in CUNYAC play, all of which came in straight sets.
In doubles, Gobbato recorded a league-high-tying nine victories at the top flight. He tied junior teammate
Leonard Margolis, who sports a 9-4 record in pairs competition this season for the Bearcats.
Rookie of the Year - Rohan Mathur, Fr, Brooklyn
Mathur has bursted onto the scene for the Bulldogs in 2018, compiling a 5-1 singles record. He is the first Bulldog to earn Rookie of the Year accolades since
Ben Forberg in 2007.
In addition, Mathur has lost only a total of nine games in his five singles victories this season, and went a perfect 3-0 against CUNYAC opposition in singles matches.
Coach of the Year - Gregory Wyzykowski, Baruch
Wyzykowski is the second coach in as many years to be recognized as the CUNYAC Coach of the Year in his debut campaign, joining Hunter's
Ed Metzendorf in 2017.
In his first season, Wyzykowski led Baruch to their second-straight CUNYAC regular-season title and mentored four student-athletes to CUNY All-Star praise. The Bearcats concluded the regular season at 9-4 overall and 6-0 in league contests.
