FLUSHING, NY - With the culmination of the women’s indoor track and field season, the City University of New York Athletic Conference and the U.S. Army have announced the 2013 women’s indoor track and field all-stars and honorees. Lehman's Tobi Alli was issued the Performer of the Year Award for her 2013 successes. The junior was previously named as the CUNYAC Championships’ Most Valuable Player recipient. Medgar Evers' rookie Samantha Brathwaite was named Rookie of the Year while Stephie-Anne Dulipre received the Sportsmanship Award and Coach of the Year went to CCNY's Hugh Reid.
Alli, a junior, scored 38 points for her team at the CUNYAC Championships in February setting a new record in the conference. The prominent Lehman College athlete, who was an All-American last year, finished in first place for the 200 meter dash (25.36) and scored big in the long jump where she snatched the top honors at 5.33 meters.
"Honestly getting an award is such amazing experience, but getting Indoor Performer of the Year for the second time, is an honor," said Alli. "However, what satisfies me the most is not individual awards, but team achievements. We didn't win indoors this season but come outdoor season, the results shall be diffferent."
Samantha Brathwaite of Medgar Evers College was acknowledged as with the Rookie of the Year Award. The freshman grabbed the gold in the CUNYAC Championships’ high jump event with a height of 1.57 meters.
"I am very happy to honored with the award," said Brathwaite. "I have worked hard in all my meets and in practices leading up to competition. I am grateful to have competed at the ECAC's and look forward to outdoor season for more goals I can possibly achieve."
The Sportsmanship Award recipient Stephie-Anne Duliepre, of Hunter College, placed second (2:28.58) in the 800 meter dash at the CUNYAC Championships. The junior also helped her 400 relay team finish in first place (4:49.36.). Duliepre is always helping others, whether it's on the field or off, and strives to increasingly influence her teammates.
With the help of Coach Reid, CCNY’s women’s team secured its second title in three seasons, and fifth overall title at the championships. In only his third year as coach at CCNY, Reid helped his women set six new school records during the season and attain a regional ranking. A highly-recognized coach, Reid has reinvigorated the women’s track program at CCNY, and has built one of the most improved teams in the conference in just one season.
“It’s a great honor to win these awards again," said Reid. "All the credit for our exceptional programs goes to our team. We set out goals in the beginning of the year and our athletes worked extremely hard pushing themselves to go after quality performances. The men wanted to shatter the record books and the women wanted to reclaim the title and they did just that. A lot of time and patience went into our seasons and I’m grateful for these awards and extremely thankful to my coaching staff for everything.”
