Bronx Wins Third Straight Title Over Queensborough

#3 Bronx Broncos 83, #4 Queensborough 68 Boxscore

In a game between the lower seeds, the #3 Bronx Broncos took on the #4 Queensborough Tigers at Borough of Manhattan Community College in the CUNYAC/Con Edison Community College Men’s Final. For the Broncos, they would be looking for their third consecutive championship and their fifth overall. The Tigers would be going for their first CUNYAC Title since 2003 and seventh overall.

"I am really happy with how my kids performed tonight," said First-Year Head Coach Sean Kelly. "They really stepped up to the challenge."

Queensborough’s John Peloso got the game off to a quick start with a three-pointer just 20 seconds into the game. The Broncos from the Bronx answered quickly with a 13-2 run to put the game at 13-5 less than three minutes into the game. The Tigers inched back to make the game 18-11 but a couple of shots from beyond the arc put the Broncos back up 26-13. Back and forth action pegged the game at 37-27 with 3:50 left in the half. Over those last few minutes, Bronx went on a 9-0 run to give them a comfortable 46-27 lead. CUNYAC/Con Edison Player of the Year Ronnell Ross led the Broncos with 11 points and five rebounds while Second-Team All-Star Ronald Washington contributed another 11 points to the effort. Leading the Tigers was Andre McFarlane with six points and nine rebounds.

The Tigers came out with a lot of energy in the second half. After an early basketball by the Broncos, Queensborough went on a strong 17-4 run over a five minute period that brought the game within reach at 52-44 Bronx still leading. The game would stay close as the teams went point for point until Bronx’s Jamal Celestin and Ross hit back-to-back three-pointers to put the Broncos up by 11 but the Tigers quickly answered back with a three of their own and a deuce to get the game back within six. The Broncos experience took over from there with a 14-2 run that put the game away and sealed the three-peat 83 to 68.

Leading the Tigers was Troy Singleton who scored 24 points while shooting an unbelievable 80% including 5-5 from beyond the arc. Fellow Tiger Andre McFarlane chipped in with 10 points and 16 boards. For the Broncos, it was Ronnell Ross leading the charge with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Ronald Washington and Jamal Celestin scored 18 points each to help the Bronco effort. Also scoring in double figures was CUNYAC/Con Edison First-Team All-Star Derrick Fernandez who had a triple-double scoring 16 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and dishing 11 assists.

For Ronnell Ross’ effort, he would earn the CUNYAC/Con Edison Player of the Game.

"I feel great," said Ross. "I knew that we were going to play hard and whoever we were going to play wasn't going to stop us. We wanted to come out strong and not give them any momentum"
