It has been quite a week for City College of New York outdoor track and field superstar PAUL DEDEWO.
He spent last Friday evening earning his first All-American honor with his fantastic performance at the NCAA Division III National Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 400 Meter Dash. Then yesterday, the standout was named the City University of New York Athletic Conference/Hospital For Special Surgery Scholar-Athlete of the Month for May. Dedewo majors in Advertising and currently holds an impressive 3.55 GPA.
“Earning an accolade like this is definitely an honor,” the DeWitt Clinton High School product said. “There are so many student-athletes that work diligently in both their athletic and academic endeavors, and to be chosen for this award makes me very proud. I’d also like to thank my coaches for their guidance and assistance throughout the outdoor track and field season. With their support, I was able to see accomplish so many things that I set out for myself.”
Dedewo’s stellar month began back on May 1st when he led CCNY's outdoor track and field team win the CUNYAC championship, being named the Most Valuable Performer of the meet, as he won four events: the 200 meter dash (21.97), 400 meter dash (48.91), 110 meter hurdles (15.79), and the 400 meter hurdles (57.55). He was also a member of the winning 4x400 meter relay team that included Vincent Roberts, Bakary Touray and Shodan Rodney and finished with a time of 3:25.10.
He was named Outdoor Track and Field Performer of the Year by the City University of New York Athletic Conference on May 16th – an honor he also earned during the indoor track and field season, as well.
On May 22nd at the ECAC championships, in the 200 Meter Dash, the Bronx resident finished in second place out of 22 competitors with a time of 21.80. He also finished second out of 19 competitors in the 400 Meter Dash, completing that event in 48.15 - a mark that set a new school record. He qualified for the Nationals in both events.
At the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 29th, he competed in the 400 Meter Dash at the Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan in Delaware, Ohio, and in the preliminaries, he finished in eighth place amongst 19 amazing competitors, with a time of 48.17. The following day, he finished in eighth place in the 400 Meter Dash final with a time of 48.44, solidifying himself as an All-American as one of the eight best in the Nation.
Adittionally, he just missed becoming an All-American in the 200 Meter Dash – completing that event in a time of 21.869 and finishing in 10th place – falling short of All-American status by a one-hundreth of a second.
"It's safe to say that Paul had himself a terrific month, and I'm very pleased to see him continue to get the recognition that he has earned," said Head coach Hugh Reid. "In addition to reaching All-American status, he has earned a reputation for being a great person, and an ambassador of the sport of track and field. It's always great to see someone like him succeed both in the classroom and on the track."
