No. 1 NJCU, No. 3 Baruch Advance to Friday's CUNYAC Men's Volleyball Championship Match

- No. 1 seed New Jersey City and third-seeded Baruch will meet in Friday night's CUNY Athletic Conference Men's Volleyball Championship title match after posting semifinal victories Thursday evening.  The Bearcats advanced to their 20th straight final with a 3-0 victory over second-seeded Hunter while the Gothic Knights shook off a first-set setback to No. 4 John Jay to down the Bloodhounds 3-1.

NJCU and Baruch will meet Friday at 6:30 pm at the Hunter Sportsplex.

Baruch defeated Hunter, 3-0 by scores of 25-20, 25-19, 25-22 to advance to its 20th straight conference title match at the Hunter Sportsplex. The Bearcats improved to 14-12 overall, while the Hawks moved to 16-9.

In the third set Hunter led 13-8 when the Bearcats used a 9-3 run to take a 17-16 lead on an Ismael Sanogo kill.  The Hawks tied the set at 17 and 18 before five straight Baruch points made it 23-18.

Baruch recorded 42 kills on a .397 hitting percentage compared to 23 kills and a .113 clip for Hunter. For Baruch, Peter Gavroff led all players with 14 kills on .462 hitting. CUNYAC Rookie of the Year Benjamin Nirenstein added 10 kills and seven digs, while Brennan O’Connor totaled five kills on .625 hitting and Sanogo had five kills on five swings. Ari Osmanaj finished with 28 assists and six digs.

Hunter was led by conference Player of the Year Ahmed Mohamed with 14 kills and five digs. Wesley Stubbs handed out 17 assists.

New Jersey City advanced to the CUNYAC final with a 3-1 (28-30, 25-17, 25-15, 25-19) victory over the fourth-seeded Bloodhounds Thursday night.  The Gothic Knights moved to 19-9, while the Bloodhounds are now 15-13.

New Jersey City hit .361 with 58 kills, compared to 52 kills on .180 hitting for John Jay.

NJCU's Marcus Pardasie led all players with 21 kills on .381 hitting, while Amaru Perales added 12 kills on .407 and Matt Peralta recorded nine kills hitting at a .412 clip. Alex Casais dished out 49 assists, and Anthony Matute led the defense with 18 digs. The Gothic Knights totaled 12 blocks in the match.

John Jay was led by Nick Fuentes with 20 kills and nine digs. Micah Rossman added nine kills, and Adam Bainey contributed seven. Jimmy Thinlay finished with 44 assists and 10 digs. Defensively, CUNYAC Libero of the Year Logan Ramos recorded nine digs.
