NEW YORK - Top-seeded Baruch held off No. 2 seed Hunter as the Hawks attempted to complete a comeback from a 2-0 deficit to earn a 3-2 victory Friday night at the Hunter Sportsplex in the title match of the 2025 CUNY Athletic Conference Men's Volleyball Championship. Set scores were 25-20, 25-22, 19-25, 13-25, 15-13.
With the win, Baruch captured its fifth straight CUNYAC title and 15th in program history and earns the CUNYAC's automatic berth into the 2025 NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball Championship.
Baruch's (18-11)
Peter Gavroff was named CUNYAC Men's Volleyball Championship Most Valuable Player for the second straight season after totaling 18 kills in Friday night's final. Gavroff hit .412 on the evening and also contributed eight digs.
In the deciding set, Baruch took a 7-5 lead on a Gavroff kill before Hunter (18-11) scored five of the next six points to go up 10-8 on a
Lucas George service ace. The Bearcats responded by reeling off six straight points, five with
Ryan Oommen serving, with a service ace and a Hawk attack error making it 14-10 in favor of Baruch.
Following a timeout facing match point, Hunter scored the next three points, with the Hawks taking advantage of a
Ahmed Mohamed kill and back-to-back Baruch attack errors. The Bearcats clinched the match on a
Noah Pak kill.
Down 2-0 following the first two sets, Hunter hit .263 in the third set and limited Baruch to .115 hitting to stay alive with a 25-19 win. The Hawks netted four straight points to build a 20-13 lead after a Foley kill, and a Mohamed kill clinched the match. Hunter was in total control in the fourth, scoring the first three points and using five straight points capped by a
Brandon Yeh service ace to go up 20-8. The Hawks hit a blistering .423 in the fourth with Baruch hitting just .080.
Baruch came out hot in the first, opening up an early 9-4 lead and hitting .429 in the first frame. The second set was tied 22-22 before the Bearcats scored the final three points on a block by Pak and
Haoxin Hu, a Gavroff kill and a Pak service ace.
Pak finished with nine kills, with
Ari and
Argjend Osmanaj combining for 13 kills, with Argjend recording seven and Ari six. Oommen totaled 38 assists and a team-high 12 digs, with Pak and Argjend Osmanaj notching six apiece. Hu led the Bearcats with four blocks as Baruch racked up nine on the night. The Bearcats hit .168 for the match.
Mohamed and Foley combined for 37 kills, with Mohamed tallying 20 and Foley 17. Mohhamed recorded eight digs, with
Wesley Stubbs handing out 34 assists and posting seven digs.
Annes Deljanin had five blocks for the Hawks (one solo), while Yeh finished with three service aces. Hunter hit .205 on the evening.
Baruch will learn its next opponent on Monday, April 14 at 10 am when the 2025 NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball selection show airs on NCAA.com.
