Guarino Sets New Championship Record to Lead Hunter on Day Two of the 2024 #CUNYAC Women’s Swimming & Diving Championship

BRONX, N.Y. (Feb. 3, 2024) – Hunter’s Kiana Guarino set a new conference championship record on day two of the 2024 CUNYAC Women’s Swimming & Diving Championship at Lehman’s APEX Center.
 
Guarino’s record-setting performance came in the 400-yard I.M., as she posted a time of 4:44.71, smashing the previous standard of 4:50.53 set by Yee Phang in 2018.
 
Overall, the Hawks turned in another strong effort on the day and have accumulated 190 points through two days of competition. Baruch is in second-place with 114 points, followed by John Jay (90), Brooklyn (79), Lehman (62) and York (4).
 
In the 200-yard freestyle, Hunter’s Cara Chang was the top performer with a time of 2:05.98, three seconds faster than the second-place swimmer. Germayne Chau successfully defended her title in the 100-yard backstroke, winning the race in 59.17, now the second-fastest time in championship history.
 
Hunter was also the top program in the 800-yard freestyle relay, as a team of Guarino, Kateryna Titarenko, Parvina Makhmadlieva and Chang completed the race in 8:36.86, 15 seconds faster than the second-place squad.
 
Baruch captured two gold medals on the day. The Bearcats claimed gold in the very first event of the day, as a team of Sophia Kouchtaf, Joyce Wong, Kira Chen and Kaetlyn Chavez posted a time of 1:55.34, edging out Hunter by .25 of a second.
 
Chen claimed gold in the 100-yard butterfly, winning the race in 1:00.44, now the second-fastest performance in championship meet history.
 
In the 100-yard breaststroke, John Jay’s Miranda Perez secured her second gold medal of the meet, finishing the race in 1:10.43.
 
The final day of the 2024 CUNYAC Women’s Swimming & Diving Championship is Sunday, Feb. 4 at Lehman’s APEX Center. The first event of the day is scheduled for 10:00am and will broadcast HERE.
