FLUSHING, N.Y. - The 2024 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) women's tennis All-Star awards and teams were announced recently.
For the fourth consecutive year, Baruch senior
Ava Deguzman was named the conference's Player of the Year.
Gabriela Vargas of Lehman was named CUNYAC Rookie of the Year, while Baruch's
Gregory Wyzykowski was selected as the Coach of the Year for the second straight season and third time in his career.
Deguzman finished the fall with a 14-0 record playing at No. 1 singles for the Bearcats as she captured Player of the Year honors for the fourth straight season. At No. 1 doubles, Deguzman posted a 13-1 record as she led Baruch to an undefeated conference record, the No. 1 seed in the CUNYAC/HSS Women's Tennis Championship and the program's fifth-straight championship finals appearance.
Vargas, playing primarily at No. 2 and No. 3 singles for the Lightning, posted an 8-6 singles mark, including a 4-0 record at No. 2 singles. Vargas also registered five doubles wins for Lehman as she helped the Lightning earn the No. 4 seed in the CUNYAC/HSS Women's Tennis Championship.
Wyzkowski earned CUNYAC Coach of the Year accolades for the second straight season and the third time on the women's side. He guided the Bearcats to a 12-2 record, including a 5-0 conference record, and the program's fifth straight appearance in the CUNYAC/HSS Women's Tennis Championship title match, in which it was edged 5-4 by Hunter.
