2021 CUNYAC/Healthfirst Women’s Soccer All-Stars Revealed

FLUSHING, N.Y. – On the heels of Saturday's CUNYAC/Healthfirst Women's Soccer Championship Semifinals, the City University of New York Athletic Conference announced its All-Star Teams for the 2021 women's soccer season, as voted upon by the league's head coaches.

Cassidy Canberg of The City College of New York was voted CUNYAC Player of the Year, while Brooklyn's Angelina Vasta was voted CUNYAC Rookie of the Year. After leading John Jay to the regular season championship, Bloodhounds Head Coach Ajani Clunie was selected CUNYAC Coach of the Year.

Player of the Year: Cassidy Canberg, So., F, CCNY
Canberg was the league's most dangerous striker during the regular season, leading the conference in points (33) and goals (14). The sophomore found the back of the net in eight games, including three multi-goal performances. One of her best performances of the season came in a win over Old Westbury, when she produced 12 points on five goals and two assists. At the time, her effort was the highest scoring output in all of NCAA Division III.

Rookie of the Year: Angelina Vasta, Fr., GK, Brooklyn
Vasta was a great addition to the Bulldogs in 2021. The rookie started 12 games, making a conference-best 133 saves. The keeper earned her first career shutout in a victory over York.

"Playing as a goalkeeper has always been something that has served as an escape for me and continues to be a central part of my life," said Vasta. "This past season has been so memorable, playing alongside some of the most supportive teammates I could ask for and having such an encouraging coach that always pushes me to be my best. I am so thankful to have won the CUNYAC Rookie of the Year and look forward to continuing my soccer career at Brooklyn College to both develop my soccer abilities and grow in character."

"Angelina has been a very welcomed addition to the team," said Bulldogs head coach, Jose "Tito" Castillo. "She showed a great foundation of the GK position from day one and was eager to learn and improve her skillset. We have challenged Angelina in many different ways throughout the season. She also took ownership of her development and would come to practice with ideas for things she needed to work on. It's a great feeling to see all her hard work be rewarded with the CUNYAC Rookie of the Year."

Coach of the Year: Ajani Clunie, John Jay
In his first season as head coach, Clunie led the Bloodhounds to their second straight regular season championship. Under Clunie's tutelage, John Jay's back line was the best in the conference, as the program did not concede in a goal in conference play.

"It's an honor to be selected as Coach of the Year," said Coach Clunie. "Thank you to the committee and to my fellow peers. It has been a challenging season for a lot of programs, and the greatest thing is that we were able to provide a viable playing experience for our team while competing at a high level. Thank you to the Athletics Department, my players, and coaching staff as this would not be possible without their hard work and dedication daily."
