During the fall semester, the City University of New York Athletic Conference will look back at some of its historic fall championship teams, recognizing the rich tradition of athletic excellence by the league’s 13 member institutions.
In 2004, the Kingsborough women’s volleyball team made an improbable run to capture its first CUNY Athletic Conference Community College Women’s Volleyball Championship in 10 years.
Led by head coach
Paul Watson, the host Wave won each of their two matches in Pool Play, setting up a contest against Queensborough in the semifinal round. Kingsborough didn’t drop a game to the Tigers, winning the match, 3-0 (30-16, 30-21, 30-17), setting up the championship final against top-seeded BMCC.
In the championship match, it was the serving of Kingsborough that led them to victory, racking up 21 services aces. The Wave handled the Panthers in the opening frame with a 30-16 victory and strung together a 12-3 spurt in the second set to win the game, 30-21. Kingsborough continued its strong play in the final set, securing the program’s first conference title in a decade with a 30-17 win.
Overall, Kingsborough won all four of its matches, dropping just one set on the day. First-year
Bern’dette Edwards was tabbed the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, while classmate
Armela Dosti landed a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
To date, Kingsborough has won three CUNYAC championships in the sport of women’s volleyball. In addition to earning titles in 1994 and 2004, the Wave went on to win the league title once more in 2012, also led by Coach Watson.
