STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (May 4, 2019) - The No. 2 seed College of Staten Island made it seven straight league titles on Saturday, knocking off top-seeded Hunter College, 9-6, in the 2019 CUNYAC/Modell's Softball Championship at the CSI Softball Complex.
The Dolphins led 9-0 midway through the game and appeared well in control, but the Hawks clawed back.
Junior clean-up hitter
Brittney Salvador put Hunter (20-11) on the board in the fourth with an RBI double to right-center, before the Hawks exploded for a five-run fifth to close the gap even further.
Hunter was down to, at the time, its last out, until it strung together three straight RBI hits. Junior third baseman
Colleen McCoy got it started with an RBI single. Senior outfielder
Alana Vezza followed with an RBI double. Salvador smacked a two-RBI double to left-center.
CSI freshman pitcher
Jaclyn Kateridge settled down after that stretch, as she retired seven of the final eight batters to face her. She allowed just two earned runs and walked one on the day, en route to being tabbed as the championship's Most Valuable Player.
"Jackie has been a workhorse for us. She plays every position possible that I need her to work," CSI Head Coach
Stella Porto said. "Without her, we wouldn't be where we are today. The Most Valuable Player award is well-suited for her."
"It just feels really unreal. We suffered through a lot of injuries this season. It feels really good to come out winning," Kateridge added. "I was out there pitching for them (the team). That's all I was thinking about."
In their early offensive outburst, the Dolphins, who led 1-0 through two innings, put up six runs in the top of the third and never looked back.
Freshman third baseman
Samantha MacPherson got the scoring started in the frame with a two-RBI double to left-center. Junior outfielder
Christina Cerverizzo lined an RBI double of her own. Junior shortstop
Patricia Riches added a sacrifice fly to expand the CSI lead to 7-0.
The Dolphins now await word on their fate in the NCAA Division III Championship. The selection show will air Monday (May 6) at 1 p.m. on
