There is just one remaining undefeated team left this season in the ranks of NCAA Division III men's volleyball.
Whether or not you thought that team would be Medgar Evers College is probably another thought altogether.
Entering the 2019 campaign, Medgar Evers had not put together a winning season since 2003. Well, under the guidance of second-year head coach
Teresa Rodriguez, the Cougars are off their best start in program history at 10-0.
"It feels really amazing," Rodriguez said about being the only remaining undefeated team in Division III. "To build this program up and be a part of history, especially with the players I have that really want to fight for it, it is great to make history with this team."
While the program isn't ranked or receiving votes in the AVCA Top 15 Poll, it hasn't deterred them from their strong start. To this point, Medgar Evers has lost just a total of five sets in its first 10 matches.
The Cougars have their toughest challenge on deck though. Medgar Evers is set for a 10 a.m. matinee showdown against last year's conference runner-up Baruch on Saturday.
"The key to getting the win (against Baruch) will be to play as a team, execute and lift each other up. We need to play smart volleyball," quoted Rodriguez.
Additionally, freshman outside hitter
Nius St. Clair, who has been named the CUNYAC Player and Rookie of the Week this season, has paved the way for the Cougar offense in just his first year. He leads the league in hitting percentage (.393) and averages the most kills per set (5.21) of any player in the conference.
With less than a month to go in the regular season, Medgar Evers is well on its way to breaking the program's record for wins (16). The Cougars are also in search of their first appearance in the CUNYAC Tournament since 2015.
