QCC Wins Region XV Volleyball Championship; One Win Away From Nationals

Flushing, N.Y. (Oct. 28, 2019) - The Queensborough Community College Tigers won the 2019 Region XV Championship, defeating Fashion Institute of Technology 3-2 on Saturday, October 26, for their fourth consecutive title at Orange County Community College, in Middletown, New York.

After making quick work against Monroe College-Bronx (19-4), winning in straight sets 3-0 to make the finals, the Tigers (22-5), faced off against FIT (25-2), who previously beat the Tigers late in the year, 3-2.

In a back and forth match that went the distance, QCC handed FIT their second loss of the season (25-19, 18-25, 25-23, 21-25, 15-8). “This game was probably the most fun and memorable game I ever had the chance to coach” Head coach Jason Demas said.

This will be the Tigers fourth straight year vying for another ticket to Nationals. QCC has finished as high as seventh place in the Nation in 2016.

In the match, the Tigers were led by Paige Hughes, Hughes had team highs in kills (11) and blocks (3). The sophomore also contributed 18 to the teams outstanding 111 total digs. For her efforts, Hughes was tabbed as Regional Most Valuable Player.

Teammates Georgia Alexiou and Michelle Sosa were named to the All-Tournament team.

Next up, the Tigers will travel to Brockton, Massachusetts to play Massisoit College, the Region 21 Champs on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. The winner of that match gets one of the eight spots in the 2019 NJCAA Division III Championship the following weekend.
