CCNY's Pena Brothers and CSI's Falcone Take Home Top Awards

The CUNY Athletic Conference is proud to announced the 2014 CUNYAC/MCU Baseball All-Stars. The Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year were Gabriel Pena and Adrian Pena, brothers from CCNY. Pitcher of the Year went to CSI’s Chris Falcone while Coach of the Year went to his head coach Mike Mauro. The Sportsmanship Award went to Lehman’s Kevin Hernandez.

Gabe Pena led CUNYAC in batting with a .389 average which was over 20 points higher than the next closest hitter. He wasn’t just getting singles with a league-leading .656 slugging percentage that was in large part due to Pena being tie for second in doubles and homeruns at 9 and 3, respectively. Unsurprisingly, his outstanding batting average helped him lead the league in on-base percentage as well.

"It feels amazing to be recognized as a good ball player, and its an honor to be part of such a prestigious group,” said Gabriel Pena. “I want to thank my teammates, coaches and family for helping to make me the player I am today."

On the mound, Falcone was one of the strongest performers all season. He finished second in the league with a 1.79 ERA while leading the league with an 8-1 record. Falcone led the league with four shutouts, 80 strikeouts, and an opponent’s batting average that was below .200.

The younger Pena brother batted .305 throughout the season. He tied for the league-lead in triples at four and was 9th in slugging percentage at .421.

"It’s a great honor,” said Adrian Pena. “I was somewhat surprised; I hold myself to high expectations so receiving this award is very exciting. I pride myself on being the young one of the group, so this really feeds my confidence. Its great motivation for me going forward."

CSI Head Coach Mike Mauro earned his fifth Coach of the Year honor after guiding the Dolphins to a CUNYAC Regular Season title. His Dolphins had the conference’s highest batting average and highest fielding percentage. Mauro’s team also was second in CUNYAC in ERA while boasting a 9-1 conference record.
