Hawks' Newcomb Named for Second Time & Baruch's Olson Takes Rookie Honor

CHRISTOPHER NEWCOMB, Hunter

Outside Hitter/Senior/Waimea, Hawaii/Waimea

Christopher Newcomb finished the week with an impressive 81 kills on .470 attacking while managing two service aces and 13 total blocks, as Hunter continues on with a 16 game win streak and undefeated CUNYAC record(13-0), 21—7 overall.  The senior outside hitter started the week registering nine kills on .615 hitting percentage in the straight three set win against Lehman (Mar. 20). He followed this performance with 13 kills and eight digs in the 3-1 win over conference rivals #14 Baruch (Mar. 22). Newcomb went on to help the Hawks go 4-0 at the Endicott Tournament en route to earning a spot on the All-Tournament Team. The Hawaii native continued to rack up the kills as the tournament progressed by registering 13 kills against Hilbert, 15 kills against #10 Rivier, 15 kills registered versus SUNY IT and week high of 16 kills against Southern Vermont. With the 26 games Newcomb played in the week he averaged 4.26 kills per game.

 

CUNYAC/Con Edison Men’s Volleyball Rookie of the Week

DANNY OLSON, Baruch

Setter/Freshman/Franklin, Indiana/Punahou, (Hawaii)

Danny Olson earns his first rookie of the week award for the 2012 season campaign as he totaled an impressive 205 assists and 34 digs in Baruch’s 3-4 week. The freshman notched 33 assists and four service aces in a conference win over CCNY. Olson followed this performance tallying 38 assists and six digs versus Hunter. The rookie registered his week high of 45 assists and 14 digs in the 2-3 loss against #15 Kean. He finished the week with 36 assists and five digs against #4 Juniata as the Bearcats return to action March 30 competing at the Vassar Invitational in Poughkeepsie, New York. They are set to face off invitational hosts and #11-ranked Vassar at 2:00 pm and Lancaster Bible at 8:00 pm.
