Hunter Wins Second Consecutive Women’s Cross Country Championship

The 2015 CUNYAC/University Student Senate Women’s Cross Country Championship was held on Sunday, October 25th at Van Cortlandt Park. The Hawks from Hunter came out on top for the second consecutive season with their Deborah Ramirez was the race’s MVP.

“I prepared well in advance to stay loose for the race,” said Ramirez. “Today is a race that I was not looking for PR. I was looking for place. I wanted to win. And when you want something bad enough, you’re going to get it.

13627Ramirez finished the 6K course with a time of 24:46.1. She led for most of the race and ultimately won by nearly 45 seconds as second place finisher Kaitlin Hicks finished in 25:27.1. Third place went to Baruch’s Maria Malave finished in 26:04.7.

The Hawks dominated the field with a score of 23 points. Second place John Jay was 50 points behind at 73 which is the largest margin of victory since 2010-11. Hunter finished at 1, 4, 5, 6, and 7. Finished third was York at 78 points followed by Baruch in fourth at 121, Staten Island in fifth at 123, CCNY in sixth at 133, Brooklyn in seventh at 202, Lehman at 206, and Medgar Evers rounding out the field with 253.

First to finish for Hunter was Deborah Ramirez. After that, the Hawks grabbed four straight as Tiffany Merlinsky, Vera Pertsovskaya, Alexa Kluepfel, and Bianca Rey finished back-to-back at 26:36.8, 26:46.0, 27:20.1, and 27:21.6, respectively.

The championship gives the Hawks their 13th title which is the most all-time.
