NEW YORK, N.Y. - Medgar Evers captured its second straight CUNY Athletic Conference men's outdoor track and field championship on Saturday at the 2025 CUNYAC Men's Outdoor Track and FIeld Championship at Icahn Stadium. The Cougars compiled 273 points to outdistance Hunter (166). CCNY (76), Lehman (63) and York (26) rounded out the field.
Medgar senior
Chrisnel Nicolas was named Championship Most Valuable Performer. Nicolas took first place in the discus (31.21 meters) and the pole vault (3.40 meters) while coming in second in the shot put and the javelin. He also registered third place finishes iin the long jump and the high jump.
The Cougars won a total of 11 events on the afternoon and set three CUNYAC championship records. The men's 4x100 relay, consisting of
Jahiem Johnson,
Reco Griffith,
Zion Young and
Omari Hinds, captured the event in 42.54 seconds, breaking the record of 42.67 seconds set by Kingsborough CC in 2009.
Griffith also had a pair of solo championship records as he took gold in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes. In the 100, after running a championship-record 10.64 seconds in the prelims, he took first in the final with a 10.67-second effort. That mark broke a 25-year old record set by Marvin Primo of BMCC in 2000. In the 200 Griffith placed first with a 21.71-second effort, besting Trent Toussaint's (KCC) 21.77 set in 2002.
MEC's Rupert-Luard Charles was first in the 400 (50.42) and in the long jump (6.27 meters). Hinds placed first in the high jump (1.83 meters) and the triple jump (12.17 meters). The Cougars' 4x400 relay also came in first with a 3:32.38 effort.
Dontay Washington was victorious for Medgar Evers in the 110 hurdles (17.39), with Michael Ortega winning the hammer throw with a toss of 32.71 meters. Joshua Felix had the top javelin throw with a 42.42-meter mark.
Hunter took first in four distance events, with Mateo Pinafiel winning the 1500 in 4:20.06. Leonardo Kaplan took gold in the 3000 meter steeplechase (11:15.61), with Brian Guillermo winning the 5000 in 16:50.49. Hengzhi Zhu captured the 10K in 36:17.23.
The Hawks' Benjamin Landheim was first in the 400 hurdles (1:01.00), with Hunter's Jonathan Cauchi winning the shot put with a throw of 11.44 meters.
CCNY's Michael Abayev placed first in the 800 with a time of 2:08.33.
