NEW YORK - The 2025 CUNY Athletic Conference men's cross country All-Conference awards and team was announced Tuesday afternoon.

Hunter College senior Mateo Penafiel was named the Runner of the Year, while the Hawks' Brian Arias was selected as Rookie of the Year.  Hunter head coach Marvin Hawkins was voted Coach of the Year, while the Hawks' Jack Treacher was the recipient of the Sportsmanship Award.

Runner of the Year: Mateo Penafiel, Hunter (Sr., Bushwick, N.Y.)

Penafiel is the first Hunter men's runner to earn Runner of the Year since Brian Guillermo in 2023.

Penafiel, a three-time CUNYAC Runner of the Week, led the Hawks to their fifth straight conference men's cross country as their top performer.  He recorded a 27:51.1 8K time at the Fred Pavlich Invitational September 20 to take third overall, while placing seventh at the Purchase Invitational on September 6 with a 20:29.1 6K effort.  At the conference championship, Penafiel placed second with an 8K time of 28:07.1.

Rookie of the Year: Brian Arias, Hunter (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y.)

Arias was a three-time Rookie of the Week in his first season of collegiate cross country and the third Hawk to earn Rookie of the Year in four seasons, joining Penafiel (2022) and Melvil Badier (2024).

Arias had a regular-season best finish of 11th at the Fred Pavlich Invitational on September 20, posting an 8K time of 28;47.0.  At the conference championship meet, Arias came in third overall, clocking an 8K time of 28:22.7.

Coach of the Year: Marvin Hawkins, Hunter

Hawkins earned Coach of the Year in men's cross country for the third time in his career (2022, 2023).  He guided the Hawks to their fifth straight CUNYAC men's cross country title and conference-record 20th overall by placing five runners in the top 11 at the conference championship.
